I preface the following critiques by saying "They are in no way meant to berate or dismiss. I am being honest in my subjective view on these submissions. Just because something doesn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for someone else. Again, they are only my opinion and I feel honesty is the best approach if we all are to continue to grow as filmmakers and a community and I expect the same from all of you whenever I submit something; damn it. That being said:

"When I saw PK's name on this months list of DVXFEST FILMMAKERS I got that excited feeling as if I knew I was in for a treat. Unfortunately, I was let down by this piece. I expected much much more from PK after last months submission but this did nothing for me. The effect was nice and I can see this being a benefit in applying this technique somewhere down the line for a project but it was too much and too long. I regretfully say that the music was the shining element on this."
How do you feel about people? Submitted by user LuzCruz
"I am not sure how to put into words how I feel about this piece. I didn't like it. That much I know. Maybe it was the disturbing teddy bear concept or the actual be-heading of the teddy bear? I don't know. It didn't work for me as a short. I felt as if it wasn't a terribly serious contribution in using the teddy bear. Really. I have no idea what to say."
BoBo Robot Vs. Ninja Wang Submitted by user Young-H._Lee
"Again, I got that tinge of excitement when I saw YOUNG-H's name on this months list. I have grown fond of his previous work and always look forward to what he has to offer. I have to say this piece was impressive from the 'Desk Top DV Filmmakers' arena. The effects, although amatuer were impressive and made for fun eye-candy. I particulary liked the attention to detail with in staying in a true DOF. But that is where it stops for me; entertaining effects. It was fun in an 'Effects Piece' kind of way, but there was no story, no movement no nada for me. I was dispointed in that YOUNG-H received my vote last month and I was sure I was in for another adventure."

"I liked this. I was entertained. The age old story of man -vs- woman or man's conquering of woman. The boxing analogy was perfect and I was completely sold on the PUNCHLINE (Pun intended); the knockout blow was her killer smile. This was a nice effort. The talent was above average although not entirely convincing; the lead actor looked the part and the actress was smoking hot. Both could act; but it came in waves and I am not sure what happended on this element. The cinematogaphy was basic, but flawless in it's minimlist approach. I look forward to more work from this director as he grows."
Timed Romance Submitted by user Greeches
"The payoff on this one worked for me. I am a sucker for the macabre and in the end I'm getting the creeps and that is what filmmaking is supposed to do! NOt give you the creeps, but move you emotionally. When I figured out what I was being told, I was moved in that 'Oh man. That's creepy!" kind of way. A nice tale. The closing of the bathroom door was a nice touch and almost symbolic in it's end. The actor (although mostly Voice Over) was beleiavable. Rough around the edges but the voice carried me throughout. The comps were nice although the technical approach to the cinematogaphy was'nt completely on par. Still, it worked for me and in filmmaking, CONTENT IS KING. That damn Download was brutal though! Should have called this "A Romance that somewhere in a future TIME you can watch if it ever downloads! You Damn Apes!"
Being Disjecta Submitted by user disjecta
"BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO. Finally, I get to see the narrative side of Djis and he does not disapoint. Very clever, entertaining and humorous and something we can all relate to I am sure. I loved it. Really. Wonderful. A great insight that really
rings in with some truth (for the low-budget fimmaking hobbyist). Great job. This was a treat. The best of this months bunch for me and the receipt of my vote.
My vote is in too! Not going to comment too much cause John did a great job and I agree with most of his views. For me, Disjecta wins hands down. Here are my orders:
1) Being Disjecta (I actually ran into the room to call my girlfriend to come over and watch the short with me again)
2) Bobo Robot vs Ninja Wang (for the effects, not bad at all!)
3) Below the Belt (fun to watch, good effort)
4) Timed Romance ( :-X)
5) Full Circle (sorry P.K. i couldn't finish watching the whole clip, got bored)
6) How do you feel about people? (what John said )
Wow. Six entries. Not a bad turn out. But quite a drop off from last month. Who am I to talk? I didn’t get a chance to enter either.
My only question is where was Blue Spider's entry?! wasn't he going to shame PK and me this month? Another no-show. Spidey Spidey Spidey. All talk. No lights, camera, or action.
So, in alphabetical order:
BEING DISJECTA:
Your compression and quality of image is brilliant. You make that DVX work every pixel. Beautiful frames. Funny story. Great kids. It moved little slow. But I laughed quite a bit. Has anyone ever told you that you sound like David Sedaris?
BELOW THE BELT:
Excellent gimmick. Loved the story. The volume was really low. Your actors pulled it off rather well. But the coach wasn't very convincing for me. I was also thrown by the 180 rule. It didn't bother me that much, but it did stand out as I was watching. Again, I laughed quite a bit.
FULL CIRCLE:
Always a pleasure to see what comes from the mind of PK. I would have enjoyed this way more if you didn't post some test footage showing the same cool effect last week. Kind of lost it's punch that way. But LOVE the PK cameo in the picture frames. You have some great ideas floating around in that head, and I can't wait to see more. This was truly an art piece. If only you could motorize the panning so it was perfectly smooth. But as with everything you've done, you have some poetic stories to tell.
HO DO YOU FEEL?:
Wow. I feel creepy. Loved the teddy bear universe tie-in from last month. But I feel violated. Should I admit I laughed? Great sense of humor. Dark. The decapitation went on way too long. And you certainly have a future in voice-over work!
ROBOT VS. NINJA WONG:
The file says WONG, the title card says WANG. Hmmm. I'm so confused. Herbert! It's a TRAP!! Great 2D and 3D compositing, and excellent ninja skills. And in the snow, even! I appreciate the effort you put in to the effects here. You've got mad skills. And certainly showcased a 180 in style from "Herbert".
TIMED ROMANCE:
Can anyone donate webspace to Greeches? Your downloads are so painfully slow. I had to retry 3 times. However, I was pleased with the story once it downloaded. A couple of cuts in the beginning were sporadic, and it was a little slow in some places, but a fine story. Great composition. Cool locations. Sucky audio quality, and not just the compression. So, was the dinner conversation taking place in his head, or was it a flashback? Love all the details, down to the catalog in the bathroom, and him shaving with her pink razor. Creep factor of 8 or 9 for sure. That poor girl. Overall, I feel the most effort went into this piece for story, scenes, and editing. You get my vote. But only because no one was throwing up bloody oatmeal! :-X
Thanks everyone for submitting again, and keeping the FEST going. I have something to look forward to every month.
Did anyone else notice that all entries were Quicktime? YAY!
No offense taken guys. I know it's slow. Heck, I fell asleep while making it ;D It was my artsy experiment. Come on, we all have one of those!
antOmic - I was originally going to post Full Circle with the experiments, but thought I'd hold onto it incase I couldn't finish my "real" project. Sure enough... D'oh!
strancali - You might want to watch the whole thing. There's full frontal nudity at the end. (And it's of me - wink.)
disjecta - Brilliant! Disjecta you're like the neighbor on Home Improvement. We only get to see parts of your face. Very clever. I liked the different styles (dreamy, classic disjecta, and real world) coming together. The mug shots of the kids was genius! Very well done and a nice surprise from you. Loved it.
I have a question as I would like to participate next time... Where can I get sounds for the movie? Sounds like opening and closing a door, camera flash, people's steps, music background like the one used on the Disjecta movie, and all sort of sounds to enhance my future projects.

Due to many copyright violations, I couldn't submit my entry. Plus, I'm still working on it. It will be up soon.. Stay tune everyone and you're all in for a suprise, especially you platnium members. ;D
I'll post a screen capture soon just to give you all a little taste of whats to come. MUAHAHAH
:-X
Yes, I do already have my vote. I must say all entries were really good but one really stood out. Next time gadget, next time..
great work everyone. i was hoping to see more submissions but i can wait another month, i guess.
in no particular order

another guy i knew made a video like this by placing the camera on a record player or a disco ball spinner. i liked the effect then, i like it more now. how did you hide the cuts? how do you make sure the shadows from changing something in the room and your actress moving around don't effect the next rotation? nice concept executed well. it was too long, though, and i'm not a big fan of continuous piano music in independent shorts but i guess we all know at least one piano player who'll work for tips.
being disjecta
i relate to the director and his story. for me, the idea that someone would be so passionate about shooting the nature outside his home is endearingly quirky. and that he loves his wife more than his work is also so darn likeable. the video does a great job of making you empathize with the director. the only part i felt dragged was the stuff with the kids. the "mr. lucas calling" joke was awesome. as was the quality of the image he got from his dvx. i also like how we only see the lead's eyes.
bobo robot vs. ninja wang
i see this as more of an FX test than anything and a pretty good one at that. i think the effects will end up being part of a bigger narrative that i'll be excited to watch someday, but I couldn't, in good conscience, give this piece my vote. i liked the depth of field on the robot and the snowy location was beautifully shot.
timed romance
maybe i've just lost all hope for humanity or i've just got a little bit of stalker in me, but i knew this was a stalker piece almost immediately. but i think the director wanted me to know and the way the lead actor interacts with the bathroom elements was wonderful foreshadowing (grabbing the deodorant without moving the medicine cabinet door). creepy stuff. i just saw another independent though with very similar themes and characters which was a little better than this one so timed romance suffers from that comparison. but it's still a great piece. some great shot compositions.
how do you feel about people
this didn't quite feel like a complete piece and the beheading of the teddy bear carried on too long. might've had more shock value if it were just this short, abrupt glimse of violence to the bear. but the bear's story and the idea that a bear is even saying such crazy **** is wonderfully insane and the delivery was great.. could have used better (or just more) lighting and cleaner sound.
Being Disjecta - As someone already said the kids scene was a little long, but you love your kids and want to give them more air time. We understand and forgive you. It's a great story and makes the DVX100 look good. Loved it!
Below the Belt - Great short! Very impressed. Loved the concept/comparison and the execution of it. The lighting and cinematography was perfect. Every shot looked great. The sound was soft at times and it could have been shorter (I'm one to talk). Nice stuff. Can't wait to see more from you.
Timed Romance - Genius concept. Really. The part with the boyfriend (eating dinner together and the main character getting angry) might not be necessary. Without it, we're left guessing till the very end. Creepy. The closing shot was brilliant! Nice content greeches and some really nice shots throughout the piece. Good job!
Bobo Robot - Nice effects. How did you do the snow? Teach us Obi-won. It is a great visual fx short. Not much on content. Whereas Timed Romance was high on content.
How do you feel - I will never look at a stuffed bear the same way again. You made this very quickly so we forgive you for putting these disturbing decapitating bear images in our minds.
This is AMAZING! How many times do you get to watch a film festival in your underwear?
DVXfest: "A party in your underwear." Barry, I think we've got a slogan!!!
Wonderful visuals. A lil long for most people, as we all have some form of ADD, thanks to TV!! Really enjoy that concept tho!

Great analogy. She did have some attitude for wearing high heels!
-as to the sound, it is much better in the non compressed version. It sounded a lil weird to me too
Thanks for the great reaction, guys. I agree that the kid stuff is a little on the long side but that was the part I shot first and it kinda stood by itself pretty well.
My intention is to shoot the third act (still refining the script for that part), edit down the kid section and refine the entire thing into a tight piece. It was lots of fun to do and I'm hopefully going to do more narrative stuff this year.
Thanks for the support and good job to all the participants this month. The DVXFest is such a great motivator to get out and shoot
Great efforts from all the filmmakers, I thought there were some outstanding aspects to each of the films. All the filmmakers deserve big props for getting out there and finishing a film for the festival. I encourage everyone to enter whether you can spend a day or month working on your films. Some of you are going to look back at the end of year and have a body of work, a killer reel, and invaluable experience.
Timed Romance
The creep factor really pegged the scale on this one--pretty good for a 5 minute film. The sound was a bit weak and I'd also thought there could have been some better color correction and grading. The tracking shot from above that passes over the wall was a nice touch. Good pacing and it felt very complete.
Full Circle
I really like what P.K. did with this one, particularly the way this film establishes its own little world. I'd hate if every 5 minute short was trying to be a mini-feature film. It's nice to see some experimentation and exploration. The technical execution of the effect was flawless given the limitations of a cheap pan head. Maybe the pan could have been a little slower and it probably could be tightened up just a little, but I appreciated the "spin" you put on this one. BTW, I want one of those desk lamps .
Below The Belt
This one was well put together. The editing really moved this along and the cinematography for the black and white fight scenes was excellent. The female lead was sharp and brought a lot of life to the material. The male lead was good, but he could have brought a little more snap to the character. This was a very complete and well though out film.
Being Disjecta
I continue to be amazed at the quality that Disjecta can pull out of the DVX and his best works looks crystalline. The wry sense of humor and the "less is more' framing techniques really wowed me. This film was funny and really roared out of the gate, but halfway through seemed to lose some energy. I would have loved to see some additional exterior scenes that showed the tribulations of being a nature filmmaker. I can relate to the bit with the kids, but it ran on too long and shouldn't have been the core of the film. Nice pickup at the end, though; I might add some sultry music when the wife appears.
How Do You Feel About People?
This one was out of left field, but really intrigued me. The distortion in the sound track brought the technical quality down, but the concept and writing were interesting. Overall, I though this wasn't fully realized and could have used some more development.
BoBo Robot Vs. Ninja Wang
This one really rocked me. The effects works was outstanding and it was just pure crazy fun. I'l love to read a long post about the making of this short. With great animation, compositing, effects, and sound design--I wasn't missing the backstory in a two minute film. Still, I look forward to something longer with a plot.
dont wanna be the bad guy here, but this is MY OPINION:
1 Disjecta: WOW, your good, you have a story, a concept, a really good Photography, the timing... simply the best.
2 Full circle: Its not about how long it is, I really liked the timing, it was necesary to feel the related emotion of this caracter. I thik its a beautifuul piece. The only problem I see is the awfull CINELOOK post efect, its like the one u can find in after effects or Final cut, i really dont like it.
3 Bellow the Belt: Good story, but your camera is so far away from your caracters feellings in the color part, its like they didnt let you shot the rest of the space. you always in this not to close and not to far thing. The B/W was beautifull, its another movie, so intense... realy liked it. Carefull with your actors, she was grat, but he... he need to practice.
4 Ninja: Well, you know how to use your computer, but i missed the story... i thik all is abotu storytelling.
5 How do you feel: I think you must go beyond and look for something to tell, something you really want to tell. Allthoug, like me, you have to lern how to get better images.
No offense, I really think it takes a lot of courage to let people talk about your work... and vote.
By now im never make someting with my DVX100A, so i dont have material, that makes you more experimented than me, my last work was in 16 mm.
