January DVXfest Shorts

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

i really appreciate all the honesty here - i'd rather be genuinely criticized than politely lied to...so thanks! im taking a brief vacation now...need a break from my tired sore eyes staring at special fx things 24/7 the last month

barry, i was thinking about writing up a tutorial myself, what kinds of things do you want addressed? or are curious about? or if anyone has a particular question or something, let me know and ill see to include it in a tutorial

ill be back later with critiques and comments of my own

great job everyone

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Let me jump on the bandwagon as well I simply enjoyed this festival very much! :o Thanks.

YoungLee> Would you pls. cover your keying (if any used) and rotoscope techniques?

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

you got it! first on the tutorial list is: KEYING AND ROTOSCOPING TECHNIQUE!!!

let me know what else you guys want me to cover in this tutorial!!!

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Someone on the last page asked about Sound FX?

I usally just google for Wav's and MP#'s to find what I like; my UNDEAD TEST has about 20 different layers of WAV's. Hope that helps?

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Young--I'd love to read about your general workflow to put everything together. Also, something about the compositing techniques and animation would be good. Don't worry about getting to much into the tutorial thing (although that would be great), I'd just be happy to read a solid full page on your planning and how you brought everything together.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

no problem barry. actually i dont mind spending a little time on this, i want to add a tutorials section to my website so i figured this will be a nice little addition to it - if you have a specific question id be happy to address it

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

WOW!

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!

Did I say 'WOW'?

I am so impressed, I can't even start to explain... Any further analysis from my (inexperienced) self would be just bringing more wood into the forest (he he - how do you like this little attempt for literal translation?). I put my vote in... Definitely worth watching - all of them.

Disjecta: HOW DO YOU DO THAT? First, you take my breath away with your nature shots, then you give me a 'below the belt' punch: You glasses look almost exactly like mine, and you wear the exact same puzzle ring on your right hand as I do. You are not a scorpio, are you?

If you were, I am sure that's where the similarities end, as I can only dream of ever achieving the quality you so consistently produce.

If you ever call me, I won't put the phone down ;D. What's the URL for your fan club again? I have to make sure I sign up!

Jerry

P.S.: How long did it take you to put that ring together? Me, about four hours - when I finally saw it I said 'I thought I was smarter than that' :'(

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Thanks so much Jerry.... ;D

My wife gave me the puzzle ring. She lived in Libya for a while in her youth. She put it together in 2 minutes, I put it on my finger, like 5 years ago, and it hasn't come off since. So it would probably take me hours to figure out how to put it back together if it came off. :D

Where did you get yours?

btw, I'm a saggitarius

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

I got mine from my wife for my birthday. She meant to get it for me for our 20th, but it took her a year to find it. In the end she got it at a small jewelry shop in a mall in Toronto...

When she was getting it it dropped from the saleswoman hand and 'unfolded' itself. They spent like half an hour trying to get it back together but then my wife thought I'd figure it out eventually - so she gave it to me 'puzzle ready'.

It was the most entertaining romantic gift I ever got.

For the uninitiated - the puzzle ring is made of several 'twisted' rings that snap together to form one ring with an ornament. In disjecta's film you can see it in the shot where he is editing his masterpiece (around the 2:14 mark). It's a real fun gift for your loved one.

Back to film discussion...

Pfah! It's a 4-piece ring? About 10 seconds...if I don't drop it with my fat fingers. ;D

Hmmm...A heart-shaped box of chocolates...and a puzzle ring inside one of the cherry-liquer ones...hmmm...

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Those are all very impressive! Thanks to everyone for contributing, or we'd have nothing to enjoy, compliment and critique.

I'll preface my comments with the fact that I am beginner. I finally got my DVX this week and I've never made a short (yet), so I am doing a lot more learning here than teaching, but hopefully one day that scale will balance out a bit more.

Anyways, here is a rank of the films from my humble view:

1. Being Disjecta -- This one kept my interest the most, had clever shots, and was close to heart. Bravo. It did slow down a bit in the middle, but not too badly.

2. Full Circle -- This was an excellent effect. I still want to know how he hid all the cuts. It went too long for me, however.

3. Robot vs. Ninja -- The effects were great. Not enough of a story to get my vote, but definitely fun to watch.

4. Below the Belt -- I liked the analogy and the black and white stuff looked really cool. Would probably rank higher, but the audio didn't sound right to me.

5. Timed Romance -- Well done. I liked about half the shots and didn't like half. A little too much camera movement in some spots for me. Other shots, like the detail ones, I really liked.

6. How do you feel -- Didn't have the same quality as the other ones, but better than my entry of nothing.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Thanks to everyone for the comments on Below the Belt. Some of you mention that the sound is too low? I'll have to fix that. Sounds fine through my headphones but they are loud headphones. The same gentleman that did the music is cleaning up the dialogue for me so I can make it louder and still be clean. I agree that my actors did a great job and that the weakest of the group is the coach (played by me, the director). As an actor in my own shorts I can at least say that I'm always on time, I never complain and I don't eat much. thanks for the support. this was the first short I ever actually wrote a script for and I am not displeased with the results.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Michael - You should be proud of it. It's a great short! It looked like film too. Did you shoot 24p?

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Congrats to everyone who entered. They were fantastic and I'm glad I got the chance to see all of them.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Nothing else really moved me apart from

' Disjecta '

luvin' your work baby !

Its a winner by far  :P

congrats to the other entries tho - well done ;)

actually, i shot the whole thing in 60i and lit everything up so i could keep the shutter speed at 1/250 and sometimes 1/500. added some magic bullet too. i'm still not too keen on the whole 24p thing.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

It was so hard to pick this month, mostly because this month I felt yielded much better results in terms of quality as opposed to quantity - which is always good.

I have never laughed so hard in my life as when I watched, "How Do you Feel" by Luz Cruz... hahaha that was hilarious . I agree about the decapitation

Disjectas piece was another that I struggled with, and it came down to these 2 in the end. Oh god I hope imade the right decision :-/

HA! That's awesome! You did a great job Michael. Excellent story, and as I said before, excellent gimmick. Looking forward to seeing more.
