Jan C.-L. : why are you so quiet since the release?

Probably you have read most of the threads. So I would be very interested what your opinion is about the "noise" issue of the HVX claimed by people who have seen footage and already shoot with it. How do you think does it compared to the competion (I can not imagine that Panasonic did not already have a shout out before the release of the HVX). As I already pointed out in another thread I haven't seen any noise up to now. Not in the stills on this site and not even at the IBC2005 when you pointed out that this particular pre-production model (only 1080i footage) had a very slight noise issue in the black areas (actually I couldn't see any noise at all but than again my eyes are probably not that trained like yours to detect noise) but that would be fixed in the final production model. So has the noise level been reduced further since the IBC? Maybe owners are to inexperienced yet with this new cam to get out the best of it? What do you think of the footage shown on DVinfo.net and DVXuser.com? Can it be better after becoming more experienced with the HVX ? I am very curious about what you think Jan especially how the HVX holds up against the competition.

Oh before I forget people who shot resolution charts came to the conclusion the the resolution of the HVX was lower compared to the Canon, Sony and JVC. Can you give some info what your measurements showed on the resolution charts.

many thanks in advance

Cees,

Barry Green did a 4 camera shoot out today and the preliminary results should be up this week.

You will then be able to judge for yourself.

Chris

I know Barry is having a shoot out (thank God for that) but I am just interested about how Jan is judging the discussions of noise and resolution.

I think, and I could be wrong on this, but I think Jan is probably getting a little tired of people's impatience and constant questions that will be answered shortly. :)

Chris

Also if i remember correctly the last time i saw Jan involved in a discussion on this board some harsh and uncalled for statements were made against her person. So I don't blame her from staying away.

Although I'm sure her absence is work related.

Jan has been around. She recently let us know about the HVX200 manual now online.

We are very fortunate to have such a great Panasonic technical resource.

Don't misunderstand me I am a big fan of Jan and am very interested in her opinion on the recent footage shown in various threads. Maybe the title of this thread sounds offensive/insulting but this is not intended that way (sorry, English is not my native language).

I think that Panasonic has created a camera that has the industry on hold and that the amount of hype and questions about the camera have put them into a situation where all will be answered when they get the time. I'm waiting on my HVX200 and holding my questions as it's been my expirence in the past that all the tests in the world don't really tell you about the quality of the image, which is subjective. I'm interested in seeing the shootout results but not as much as I am in seeing my camera and doing my own tests on how it can handle different lighting situations. Noise on this camera is not a huge concern of mine as it's the first camera in this format. My advice is just to wait and see what people who have the camera say about it in a month or so when it's in a broader range of peoples hands. And just remember, great images arn't made by the camera, a great DP could use any camera to make great images.

If I were Jan I would be taking this month off to recover from the insanity of the last 3 months of 2005. I am sure she is well compensated, but this woman took a beaten from every yahoo who feels they deserve Varicam on steroids for less then cost of a Geo or that their desire for inexpensive, quality HD today meant Pansonic should *blink* one into existence immediately.

I am not saying the question to her is inappropriate but just pointing out that Panasonic is the only company that has someone like Jan out there on the front lines taking all the heat from anyone who thinks they deserve everything NOW. She provides an inteligent, friendly, and EXTREMLY patience face to an otherwise cold, heartless, and bottomline focused corporation. Anytiime she is in Seattle she is getting a beer on me.

cheers

Jan is around, but I would have to guess she is a tad busy these days! The last post of hers I saw was in the Mechanical Humming Noise thread re the DVX100B.

The real mystery is why Jan even comes around here anymore. Especially given some of the cry-baby temper-tantrum bullsh*t that's made its way onto some of these threads recently. Never mind some of the unbelievably rude comments that were made to her--one guy memorably alleging that Jan "thinks she's a celebrity." WTF?!!

The HVX won't be all things to everyone, but for $6,000 it looks pretty good so far, and the noise issue looks treatable, as Barry has said.

Hi,

I am here but I have to say I have been a little put off by some personal remarks and the unbelieveable statements that have been made here. I am getting over it but frankly it has been a real learning experience.

As far as the noise, I say shoot some material for yourself, the camera is fine. As far as the resolution charts, all I can say is if you are not in possession of a real manufactured res chart like one from DSC, it means that you are probably not an engineer, and frankly there is engineering to doing charts. I think the charts are bogus and mean nothing.

In addition I am swamped with work.

Best,

Jan

Having read the posts on some of the threads, I was put off by so much of what was being said. I am glad to see that cooler heads have prevailed and moved the discussion forward instead of continuing in a non-productive loop.

Jan, your prescence on this forum is a benefit to everyone and greatly appreciated.

Yeah, some of the people in this hvx section are... well... The words are not appropriate for this forum.

Morons??
Learn some goddamn respect.

Jan, I am SO sorry you had to look at that crap. Part of my living is made teaching junior college classes online, and unfortunately the impersonal nature of electronic communication brings out the vitriol and belligerence on the part of some people. They're really cowards. I'm honestly amazed at the nastiness and personal abuse I'm subjected to for knocking off only a couple of points on illiterate postings and papers, but it happens. Sometimes I just want to completely quit, but then I get a few good students who make it all worthwhile.

Part of it is just the nature of the medium. You and your company are fabulous, and I look forward to getting my hands on this camera.

Well said. No one is putting a gun to anyone's head to buy the HVX. Prospective buyers need to do their research, test drive the alternatives, commit to one, and then shut their pie holes.

What I find kind of sad is that some of the posters here for some reason seem to hold you personally responsible for all the production delays and lack of response to their questions/needs/wants on the HVX. Thanks for being here and doing the best you can with what you have to answer our questions/concerns. As for the butt heads, well what can one do?

David

Hi Jan,
Glad you dropped in!
The HVX200 is one heck of a break through.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one!

It offers so many possibilites.
Also, some recent footage is showing what this camera is capable of.
Very nice!

Steve
