hey guys and gals,

I shot this training vid for a client using my DVX100. I believe it was at 30p.
when I digitized it in, I began to notice alot of the diagonal lines are looking kinda funky. like jagged. I thought i had the wrong aspect ratio or it was in the export settings but when i go back and look at the tape, if you look close, you can see the jagged lines!

heres a still from my timeline:

here is a shot that does weird stuff as well.

not much i can do about it now, but for the future I would LOVE to know how to avoid this.

any info on this would be much appreciated because I'm at a loss.
thanks,
Mark

Moiré patterns and jaggies are common issues that can plague your video. Moire patterns appear when a fine pattern is under sampled. Basically you do not have a camera with high enough native resolution to resolve all the edge detail in a pattern. This effect can be seen when you point your camera towards a roof or telephone lines(if your far away enough). The "exterior weird shot" you posted resembles a moire pattern, although it looked quite extreme. One way you can smooth out those jaggies is by using an anti aliasing filter. Just make sure your editing system is always using the same settings as your camera recorded, but if you saw it in camera then your settings were probably fine. The first image you posted though, looked alot worse than anything I've seen from my dvx. Make sure you did not import your footage interlaced. It always helps to know what format your source footage was in, I mean, its mandatory if you want the best results.

Actually, it looks like you had your V. Freq Detail set to thin. Unless you're looking to uprezz this (including cropping and uprezzing to 16:9), shoot thick.

Your still looks like you just have your preview set at low quality or half resolution.

Your video, it's tough to tell since it's not full res.
