Jagged Edges on HDTV

I recorded my friend and his band with my DVX100a and I put it on dvd for them. I played the dvd and watched it on my HDTV and there were jagged lines around the individual band members. It was dark with a multicolor lightshow during their performance and I was thinking that the colors of the lights along with my scene file settings might have contributed to the jagged edges. I used 24pA, -3 Detail, 0 V Detail, and -3 Master Ped in squeeze mode. I used a 24p timeline in Sony Vegas and rendered it as a DVD Architect 24p Mpeg2. Do anyone know where I went wrong?
(PS. If this will help, I watched the dvd on an older, I guess CRT, TV and the footage looked great. )

"Jagged" meaning combing or just low resolution? If the former, then you have not removed pulldown properly, if the latter, then maybe you have shot with THICK detail.

There's no way NOT to remove pulldown correctly in Vegas. There are, however, ways to play a 24p DVD to an HDTV which will give you interlace artifacts.

There are also ways that the DVD could have ended up as 60i, but because the export settings seem correct, we'll deal with that after we eliminate the other possible problems.

There COULD also be color-correction/4:1:1 color issues going on here -- is there by chance a lot of red or reddish color where you're seeing the problems?

Thanks David and Cranky for the replies! I changed the DVD player to progressive and that fixed the problem. I guess 24p regular and 30p are more universal? And David you raised the question about 4:1:1 color issues. For future reference will that lower image quality and if so how could I avoid those issues?

What was happening, as I suspected, was that the DVD player was inserting 2:3 pulldown while it was playing the 24p, because it was set as though it was playing out to a standard interlaced TV instead of a progressive-scan TV. The HDTV was displaying the signal as progressive by blending the fields, giving you interlace comb artifacts every 3rd and 4th frame.

Having switched to progressive-scan output from the DVD player, the TV is displaying the 24p frames properly.

I guess 24p regular and 30p are more universal?

Not sure what that means. More "universal" than what? If you're asking about standard 24p vs. 24pA, 24pA doesn't even enter into it. It's not in the template, and you can't change the template to do it.

When you output as 24p, using the DVD Architect 24p DVD template, you output a 23.976 progressive MPEG file. Embedded in the file are instructions the DVD player will follow to insert 2:3 pulldown if playing out to a standard TV -- but the pulldown fields themselves aren't actually in the file, and the DVD player won't insert the pulldown if outputting as progressive.

As for the 4:1:1, it's a limitation of the DV format, and problems show up especially with reds. If problems arise in the future, we'll deal with it then. :)

I need help with reds!

I need help with reds!

I just shot a live show as well and all they used was red lighting....I have shot things in the past where everything looked amazing except for anything that was really red, it always turned out jaggie. What is causing this and how do i prevent it? all the footage i shot the other night is useless because it is full of little jaggies. I shoot 24pa squeeze mode with - 4 detail, -8 ped, and so on. I am always really proud of my footage, but this color "red" is pissing me off.
