There doesn't seem to be an existing thread on Jackie, so I guess I'm starting one.
Wife and I rented Jackie this past week. Neither of us wanted to go on after about 15 minutes. Very surprising result especially considering how much my wife likes the former Jacquiline Kennedy.
I can't imagine what drove the director to make such an ugly and uncomfortable movie. The overuse of extreme closeups is one thing. But the very long cuts are like walking up to someone at a party, getting in their personal space, and staring at them for long periods. Nasty. And he does it over and over and over. Add all that up then layer on some weirdly intrusive music of questionable value and you've got a walk-out. Which is what my wife and I did by hitting the eject button on the blu-ray player. Glad I didn't buy a couple of theater tix for this one.
But it occurs to me that other people might well have like it. It's gotten decent reviews, it's got a 6.9 at IMDB and an 81 from Metacritic. So am I out of my mind (again) or is this just a problem related to my revulsion at "shaky cam"?
And yes I get that the director was trying to make me feel uncomfortable as a way of projecting on the audience his idea of Jackie's own discomfort. But making me uncomfortable because the person I'm looking (staring) at is uncomfortable is just the wrong approach. I mean, I'm not Jackie -- she is.
