Jack Daniel Stanley & Mark Johnson's REKINDLED

Mark Johnson said:
I was driving in from Wichita and thinking about how much Barry's HVX book helped me and I remembered my favorite George C. Scott line from Patton. Thus, the woman I passed slowly on the freeway must have thought I was a lunatic when she looked over and saw me pounding the steering wheel and shouting at the top of my lungs, "Barry, you sonuvabitch! I read your book!"

Hah! :)

Well, I'm sure I've been called that many, many times (usually by those who prefer JVC or Sony products!) but hey, in this case, I'll take it.

My thoughts further to the fact that the Prizes mainly the HVX can really further someones career and make a huge difference in someones life, where i feel that you may just be apart of this to win, knowing how good your product will be especially compared to most here. The difference is there Jack, you know it. Im not accusing anything, just my honesty though, its a compliment to the movie. What would the prize do for you? Nothing you cant do on your own, established gentleman of leisure you are. Flying in and out, actors. It would be a shame that the contest can mean so much more to someone who couldnt afford not just the HVX but the baseplate even, or the varizoom even.
Cynic, you are way off base here. If you had followed Jack's "career" from Shed onward you would know he is ANYTHING but an "established gentleman of leisure." It's not my place to discuss his finances here but suffice it to say he is much more the "starving artist" than the "gentleman of leisure."

I mean, I WANT to comment on that whole assumption about someone else's finances, why they enter, why someone else deserves to earn/win the prize more, but I can't.

Anything I say at this point will just be likely pointed back to how I may be "irk'd" about a review in my thread ... but c'mon, this is just senseless.

Praise a film, or rip a film to shreds & give detailed reasons on why something's great or blows ... that's fine. But PLEASE let's leave filmmakers alone about whether or not they deserve a prize (or to win) vs. another, about their finances, etc.

There's saying things with little to no tact, which is acceptable. Tact is a social thing that some people will just never get/understand. But some of the things I've read take some serious forethought about what's being said, and come across as more malicious or attacking/instigating than it does just 'lack of tact'.

EDIT: HA! Woops ... looking back at this, looks like I commented anyway. :banned:

I think Jack making movies this great can only be a good thing for this place. Theres no reason why any of us cannot rise up and challenge him at the level he has risen to. Now...i'm not saying everyone is as talented as Jack, because being gifted is part of being able to make movies. However I don't think anyone has worked harder in this contest or put more effort into it than him. I dont know that for a fact of course, but I think I could be safe to say that he worked a hell of alot harder than most.

Is this any reason for him to move out of the contest? Hell no....the game has risen...the competition is at a higher level. You wanto win...then you better work at least as hard as him...if not harder. As I said talent is one thing and effort another, but until you put absolute 100% effort into it you won't find out whether or not you have the talent.

Either way...there is no reason for Jack to leave these contests. I think what he did in this fest was amazing...but I'm not overwhelmed to the point of saying "whats the use...whatever I do is gonna be **** compared to JDS." Instead I'm inspired for the next go around to give it my absolute best and see what happens.

Its the unpopular opinion to criticize his work though, and i praised it, so whats the big deal, i dont know. I personally dont think anyone has the resources to do what he has done. And dont say people didnt work hard, whether the quality of the movie was in question or not. they worked hard. Movie Master worked hard, i worked hard. Whos to say who worked harder than who?

Me find this movie boring because it so similar to what me do EVERY saturday night..... blah blah.... Ooo me put paint mixer in persons gut.... Me so origional......

Its not the money, its the time. Most people have a day job and can't work on it as much as he can or others that have that much time and talent. Deadly combination.

I'm confused why you say everyone doesn't have the resources to do what he has done?

A requirement for even entering the contest is to have a DVX or an HVX...so you can't really use the whole "this camera could really help someone." Unless that person rented a camera for the competition, but that would imply that this person has some resources. I know I couldn't really afford to rent, I'm far too busy for a rented camera to work out well for me. Well I probably could, but I think it'd waste more money than it'd save.

I could have spent $1,400 on my short if I wanted. I have that much money, and I'm only 19. I didn't think it was worth it, though. Jack had a solid concept, he ran with it, and he spent the money. That's not having more resources, that's risking your resources. He knows he has the talent to justify risking the money. Me, this was my second short. I'm not gonna spend a bunch of money hiring actors and stuff.

I don't know. I'm glad he participated. I had no idea that people were this good in these competitions....I remember checking out a lot of the sci-fi fest entries and laughing at how bad a lot of them were; in fact, I never finished watching them because they just weren't that great.

I knew my own short (Second Hand Smoke) wasn't all that great. I think it has a good script, I think it has a few good shots, and I think there's a lot of good acting (and some bad as well). Based on what I'd seen from previous entries, I was expecting to place with my short.

I'm laughing at my naivety now. Laughing and slapping my knees.

I'm not ashamed of my short. For what it is, I'm proud of it.

But next time. Next fest. Next fest I'll totally blow your guys' socks clean off. You'll be saying, where the hell did this Josh guy with that unpronouncable last name come from?

Because people like Jack just took it to the next level.

It's on, bitches. :D

Jack, what is it with your DVXuser-fest threads man? Always some controversy going on in your neck of the woods. :)

Here's how I'd rate Jack's flicks....

1. ODD Squad
2. Bone Hand
3. Rekindled
4. Shed

My opinion of course... but who the heck cares guys! Let's just focus on Rekindled here, and it's a darn fine flick if you ask me!

I ve seen his previous work and I liked this one, I'm quoted saying so after all.
Why I think so? Mostly because this movie has gave me enormous visual stimulation, a hard on you might say! And I m not talking about the sex scene, I can think of better to be frank (sorry Jack). I m talking about what visual elements in movies arouse me...and this had them all...Dear Jane had them, ID had them....Buffalo had them (only in the Buffalo sequences, not the cop)....HALFWAY had them!!!
These elements are not about quality 100%, its about personal taste, personal sickness...what we love to see...you didnt like the song...you thought it was artsy and didnt fit...damn! I LOVED IT!! I ve seen thousands of movies in my lifetime....I believe that I think more than the average person....I KNOW that this song fits here....you might not like it and thats totally respected, nobody forces you to like it..but when judging objectively you cant be personal....I ve seen TONS of movies in the same artistic mood as Rekindled...and I m telling you....REKINDLED DELIVERS!!! and since you cant stop bringing up Buffalo...Rekindled has a more solid story than that one....

As for the financial etc comments....I dont give a **** if Jack is a multi millionaire! He produced something that spoke to my heart of darkness and he is No1 in here (so far - i ve 20 more to go). You cant judge people all the time man! Its a free contest with some rules, we all entered by following the rules, we are all eligible to win. Nobody deserves it more. Its ABSURD to say that someone deserves it more than the other when we are judged by our movies. This is kinda discriminating!!!!!

In terms of sheer skill, DP, edit, etc...here is my list:

Rekindled
Bone Hand
The Shed
Odd Squad

In terms of watchability facotr..which one did I like the best for enjoyment? (Disclaimer...I like happy endings)
Bone Hand
Odd Squad
Rekindled
The Shed

Technical Aspect:

Rekindled
Odd Squad
Bone Hand
Shed

Watchability (as Matt said :) ):
Rekindled
Shed
Odd Squad
Bone Hand

I 'm disturbed and sick....

And the green-eyed monster visits one of Jack's threads yet again!
I guess that's one of the drawbacks to being talented. Everybody likes to take a swing at ya...

I don't need to add much, but I thought your flick rocked, Jack. If you win, it will be because you deserve it. Can't wait to see what your next fest entry looks like. And I hope you keep on entering, even if it makes everyone sweat a little. :)

I'll have to say this doesn't stand up to your past works. That's hard to do.

The look was great, the direction was great, the score was awesome.

I just don't see this as a horror film. It didn't put me into the center of the story. I was an outsider looking in on these characters. In horror I want to be the one worried about Michael Myers coming around the corner. I want to be the one lifting my feet off the ground in an irrational fear that something to do with the film is underneath my couch.

Don't get me wrong, this was an excellent film. I just see a lot of films in this fest going too much off the horror path. I've been a horror fan all my life. At the age of three on up my parents let me watch all sorts of horror flicks. It was a steady part of my diet.

I think you thought too much and tried to put a clever JDS spin on it. That's great. It just lost some horror points with me. The thing that frustrates me is that you know horror. Shed was very basic and to the point. I guess with the predicted JDS standard I built it up too much in my head.
