I've made my decision, and my decision is...

I am going to wait to buy the 5D MK II until after Nikon annouces their new DSLR toward the end of the year. Now don't get me wrong, I am not going to buy any Nikon (well unless it is just some rediculously amazing camera that does everything the 5D does and more for a lot less money), I just want to see what Canon will do in response to the announcement/release.

Whether Canon releases new firmware, or makes an announcement of their own, no one knows. I just think we are at a point now where big things are going to start to happen between Canon and Nikon, which is going to cause instability in the market for a while.

I am however going to buy the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 in anticipation of purchasing a Canon full frame DSLR. There aren't many things that are true long term investments, but lenses are one of them. So unless Canon scraps production of its EF line of cameras, highly unlikely, I am confident in buying the lens now, and just renting in the meantime. No one said you can't use the Magic Lantern firmware on a rental

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 ? Noooo, there is word out there that a new one with IS is about to come out.

Now the claims start flowing
Received 3 emails in the last 10 minutes claiming to know which lenses are coming.
Canon will launch the 24-70 f/2.8L IS II and 70-200 f/2.8L IS II near the end of August.

A new IS was developed by canon so it make sens to have it in some new lenses, including the 70-200 f/2.8 IS L.

We'll obviously have to wait and see if this comes to fruition. However, I have the opportunity to buy the 24-105mm f/4 with IS right now, but I don't want to because of the claims of IS wreaking havoc on pans when shooting in video mode.

Not having IS on the 24-70mm wouldn't be a deal breaker for me any way considering the speed of the lens and the work that I would be doing with the lens. If a new model comes out, then good for us, cause the older non-IS model will drop in price!

The rumors on the 24-70 have been out for a while and haven't seen anything yet. I could be wrong but I am guessing that it's going to stay a rumor. IS makes sense in video but canon isn't making their lenses for videographers.

For still photography IS doesn't make much sense on wider to mid range lenses. With the 24-70 you should be shooting at a minimum shutter speed of 1/30th - 1/100th handheld... with IS you might be able to cut that in half but unless you aren't shooting moving objects, you are going to get lots of motion blur.

I own the 24-70 and it's a great all around lens but if all you want is quality and don't mind the inconvience of switching lenses, primes are the way to go. My $80 50mm 1.8 is much sharper than the $1,000 24-70L. The way I look at it is that if you are shooting video with the 5D you aren't shooting events or sports and you most likely have the time to switch lenses.
