I've been on the fence about ML

Well, I've been of the fence for a while whether to download Magic Lantern on my 5D3. I've even gotten to the point of formatting my SD card and ready to download. Then I realize I can't use my Lexar UDMA 800X FC..... it's too slow for raw video! I get on the forums and read about the nightmares with all the Fast cards that are supposed to work but don't. Then I need an up to date comparable card reader. For the cost of a reliable fast card and a new card reader I can just about but the BMCPC. Of course then there is the work flow of working with RAW video. I think I will just get a Black magic pocket camera for the times I need to use RAW video, and keep my 5D3 a pure virgin.

The BMPCC also needs fast SD cards. If you want to shoot RAW, there are only two cards that will be fast enough. Sandisk extrme pro (goes up to 64GB) and sandisk exteme plus which goes up to 128GB but can only do 24p (30p drops frames under fast motion).

BMPCC will also require separate lenses or a $650 speedbooster, a lot of batteries or an external battery supply, a cage of you plan on using ef lenses.

Bottom line is that if you already have 5dIII and are ok with magic lantern then you should use that.

I thought the BMPCC had an internal SD card? I'm assuming since it shoots raw the card works well for that. Or perhaps I have it all wrong.

The BMCC uses SSD drives and has a built in battery but no black magic camera has built in memory. You can use an external recorder for the BMPCC but external doesn't support raw output. There are also issues with hot pixels on the bmpcc.

I've been using Magic Lantern for a few years and I have no interest in shooting RAW. Outside of the misguided worry about screwing up a camera, I can't understand why anybody would want to shoot on a Canon DSLR without ML installed. But, then again, I also don't understand the desire for virgins of any sort, so maybe it's just me.

OK, every time I have a good idea, someone comes along and messes it up...... thanks for pointing out the obvious Egproductions. I installed ML last night and I'm having a blast with it so far. BMPCC just went back up to $995.00. Now I just need a fast card, thanks for the recommendations. Reading through the ML forum on cards is almost more confusing than not knowing anything. It seems the Sandisk 64 gb is the way to go.

She's been de-flowered and it was fun! Although I did say a little prayer to the Gods of technology before the installation.

If Magic Lantern had screwed up with one camera since it came out, no one would have ever used it. Thousands of cameras are running Magic Lantern with no problems. It's extremely stable and reliable to the same level of Canon's firmware. It adds so much to the Canon cameras that I think it's a must for every Canon camera. I use it all the time on paid work and it never let me down once. I can't live without the waveform monitor and peaking anymore.

Not quite. There have been issues here and there, but they haven't been major ones. I've had ML lock my camera up, but nothing that popping the battery out and restarting didn't fix. The more established builds are more stable than the nightly builds, but it's not like this is rock solid Canon level of stability. It's good, and I still think it's worth using, but you can't claim it's perfect. yet.

Totally agree here. ML solves so many of the shortcomings of DSLR video that I always recommend that Canon video shooters at least try it out.

Im using ML since it just came out! Its really usable! I will just give here the same advise Ive been giving to everyone who is just starting with it. ALWAYS have on set a non-ML low level formatted card. If the camera locks up and nothing else is helping, with that card it will boot again. It has happend twice on me, and the card solved the problem.

ML brings so much to the 5D3 for video. Definitely a must. Having the ability to shoot raw, with a fast card is a nice bonus.

Yes, looking forward to shoot some raw, although I think I will use raw rather sparingly in my videos. I also need to wrap my head around the raw workflow. I'm on FCPX, and have DaVince Resolve 10. I had some problems before with DaVince crashing a few times so I was a little afraid to use it again. It was a known issue on the new Mac's, maybe they solved that problem by now.

I've been looking at some videos on the workflow with raw, but most of them are with Primere Pro. Any recommendations on a good video featuring the work flow with FCPX?

Yes it looks like that's the card I'll get...... no way I'm paying $350.00 for a lexar.

Michael, I would advise looking around for a Lexar card. The 1000x 64gb have been discontinued and are selling for $100. The new 1000+ 64gb cards can be had for around $200. The Lexar have been the best for people without playing the lottery.

You can look at it this way. $200 or $400 is a cheap upgrade to your camera. The image quality gains are like buying a many times more expensive camera. I see it as the best value around. Why skimp and invite issues?

Oh, yes, in response to the problems with ML, my the alpha builds are a bit of a mess. I've had very few problems with the official ML 2.3 release on my 60D (i've had some), but I've used various alpha builds on the EOS M and 6D and I've gotten so use to pulling the battery that it is second nature now. What's nice is that if there is a serious problem that is getting in the way, ML is not a permanent overwrite of the operating system so you rarely hear of a bricked camera that is attributed to ML. I've lost footage. I've had to fight with the camera to get it to boot or shut down. But, I still use ML whenever possible because the benefits far outweigh the problems. I think that not using ML due to safety concerns in an overly paranoid decision. That's all.

Bassman thanks for the advice I will look into those!

Since I have everyones attention here I have a quick question regarding ML. The 5D3 is making duplicate photos since I installed ML. Maybe I was screwing around in the menus or something and change a setting? Anyone have an idea?

Bassman, I spent a while cruising the internet for a Lexar 1000x 64gb card but can find anything close to that price other than some ebay offers from China and Hong Kong, and I'm concerned about returning it if there is a problem so I don't want to buy from Asia. I found another offer on Ebay for $130 from Calif. but says no returns, although ebay has their buyer protection guarantee. The card had no description so I weary of that. Can you direct me to a place to find a card for $100, at is not risky? Thanks.
