If you watch Regina Spektor's video "US" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pKujuTgtL0 theres a lot of matted/stop motion looking stuff...

How do they do this?

I could understand it being stop motion however the objects appear to be stop motion and she isnt yet in the same frame...?

I also saw this effect in Across The Universe during the lcd/Eddie Izzard sequence, I love the look of cut n paste/matte/stop motion stuff-

what are the best methods to achieve this look?

Thanks

Her "stop motion look" looks like it is normal recorded footage with an effect that mimics a 'drop frame' effect but extending the frames to keep the action on pace with music.

At times when Regina is in stop motion sequences, she might just be taking part in the stop motion (ie the army men coming out of her mouth). Other times it appears they are using layers and compositing (ie walking trough the 'cut outs' and the morse code pipes growing up the wall)

My best guess looking at the footage is that this is mostly recorded performance where they chopped out frames or maybe even slightly altered frame rate to get that stop motion/ old film like feel.

The rest is spfx.

My guess would be that the video simply is shot as stop montion for the most part - and she is just moving along with it.

Another option is that it was shot at full speed, but then only very select frames where used in the final peice .. basically creating a manual varying "strobe" effect.

Plus the added sublty of the occasional slight bump in camera position goes a long way to adding to the effect too.

Yeah I figured it was something like that, It just seems so complex it makes me wonder how in the world it could turn out right...-

Great video none the less
