iTunes

does anyone know why purchased songs from iTunes can't be used in NLE's?

I know they're locked and all that, I even when through what the prompter told me, but it still didn't work.

I bought a bunch of soundtrack-ish songs and now I can't use them.

Pissed at Apple,

thanks for any help

You just answered your own question. They can't be used because they have apple's DRM on them and your NLE can authenticate with that. If you want to get around that you can burn them on a cd from itunes as a Music CD then re import them.

- Note: I used to work for apple supporting guess what ? Itunes and Ipods among other things

Yep, that's what I've had to do, too.

The songs on apples servers aren't encrypted but once you download them they attach the protection into the file.
There was somone once who "tweaked" his downloads so that hey could download his files without the protection on them. He still payed for them he just didn't have DRM on them.

what i do is drop them into i movie then export them via quicktime then drag to final cut works like a charm

If the songs were illegally downloaded i'd understand, but I paid for them, so don't get it. What do they think, we're going to use those songs in a personal movie and make tons of unchartable money off it??

That would be crazy. And I'm a musician.

The way it goes with covers in music is you basically only pay them (another artist) a royalty fee if you record their song and it makes money.

And I am on a mac.. so thanks

Thats odd. Ive purchased songs in .aac format from itunes (or whatever it comes in) then just right clicked and selected "convert to mp3" and imported it into my NLE with no problems.... You sure its .mp3 format? I know lots of NLES dont like .aac or .m4a...

To answer your question : Think about the legal ramifications that Apple would have if they didn't have DRM on their songs. They already are selling songs cheaper then the Records companies would like.

Itunes and the IPOD have safeguards in them to prevent people from pirateing music. That's why Apple doesn't support getting songs off of your IPOD because it can potentially be used to violate copyright laws. Did you pay for the songs ? Yes Are you violating the law by getting your own songs off of your ipod ? No but if apple actively allows people to do that then they could wind up in trouble because they are facilitating something illegal and could be considered criminally negligent.

When Beta VCR's came out Universal Studios and Walt Disney brought a lawsuit again Sony to stop the device because it could be used for copyright violations. They obviously eventually lost.

So pretty much while I understand your frustration without this DRM on the songs there is no way the record companies would ever have agreed to allow the music to be sold on the music store.

Well stated SilverWolf. It's all about pirating. There is a work around to put he songs into your NLE and as long as you're not sharing them with others, you okay. Anyone creating art and hoping to get paid for it, doesn't want to see people buying, or even worse pirating, it and then sharing it with others. Pirating is just as much stealing as knocking over a 7-11. Stealing is stealing. That's the reason for the DRM. Apple can't afford to be complicit in the theft of intellectual property.

That's like saying making a mixed tape is like robbing a bank. Music is music, it is meant to be shared and heard, not make people rich. Until I can be sure that the ARTIST is getting the money, I will not be paying for some rich RIAA exec to sip lattes while zipping around downtown in his Ferrari.

How would you feel if you made a movie and people were making money off of that and you weren't getting a dime?

I would be glad if people think my movies are worth pirating :) My goal in life is to make movies that entertain people. If I can do that, then I have suceeded in life.

Let me say though, DVDs are VERY appropraitely priced for how much work goes into them. Wiriting, preproduction, making the movie, post, distribution, and duplication. If I can buy all that for $10 then that's almost a steal in itself. I spend too much money on dvds each month.

Call me crazy, but to me, it seems that a fraction of the work is put into making music when compared to making a movie. When I have to pay more for a music CD than a DVD one has to question what exactly is going on?
