It's Time........to be a quitter.

Hmm

Hmm

I personally don't think there is such thing as "failing to quit smoking," because any period of time where you quit smoking is an absolute success. In just 24 hours your body starts healing, and within a few weeks there is already a much-reduced chance of a number of diseases. In a year your lungs are back to perfect health in general. So if you quit smoking, and then later smoked again, you didn't fail, you succeeded for the period of time you quit smoking.

Anyway, as the die-hard smoker here posted, you do more damage just hanging around a polluted city than you do smoking a cigarette. That is NOT to defend smoking, not at all, only to say that don't be so hard on yourself if you do have "just one." What could possibly be more damaging than that attitude? If you are harsh on yourself, you figure, "Screw it, I'm a smoker again, I had one cigarette, I ruined it, I fell off the bandwagon, I may as well just go buy another pack." But if you think of it as no big deal, then you just say, "Eh, ok so I had a cigarette last night, that was a mistake, but life goes on and I don't want to take up smoking again." You can't fall into a pit of despair over nothing. One cigarette doesn't hurt anyone, you're going to be more damaged from hanging out with smokers an entire night than having one cigarette. It's high numbers of cigarettes day in, day out, no rest for your lungs at all that causes massive damage.

It's good to quit smoking for so many reasons, it's just a very unhealthy, gross habit. But I admit I've had my share of cigarettes, and smoked casually for a while. Filmmaking is such a stressful business too, and so many people smoke, it's tough sometimes. I hadn't smoked a cigarette for months before I shot my feature, then I smoked on the feature somewhat. It wasn't for the stress relief though as much as because I couldn't stay awake and every other option had been exhausted. Even two large cups of coffee and two large energy drinks in 4 hours, still not enough to fight the fatigue, 4 hours of sleep a night wears on you and sometimes something as toxic as a cigarette is the perfect jolt the body needs to stay awake. Awful, I know, but I was out of options! Next time I need to figure out how I can somehow stay awake easier, I don't know how, the caffeine is borderline useless after a week. Your body is out of reserve energy, which the caffeine taps into, and it's so used to caffeine that it's basically no longer effective. Frustrating! I hated myself for having to smoke again, haha.

I just had to get addicted to something else (triathlons - yikes!), definitely a polar opposite to smoking, but I decided that when I wanted a cigarette I'd go workout (something cardio that gets the lungs going), and if I still wanted one after I'd smoke it, but I would rarely, if ever, want to ruin all the work I just did so I gradually started smoking less and less as I got into training for events. best of luck, Doc!
