Hey everyone,

I am looking at getting a new editing computer to run media composer on. I thought i would build my own system, and maybe save a little money, and here is what i have picked out, maybe you guys can offer some suggestions on what to change. the only thing i dont have on this list is a video card because i was unsure of which one to get.
heres what i have picked out so far,

1x intel core 2 duo 2.66 GHZ
1x asus p5w64 motherboard
2x corsair 1 GB DDR2 memory
1x 10,000RPM 36 GB hard drive
2x seagate 500GB baracuda hard drive
1x samsunge dvd burner
case, power supply.

the total is $2015 in canadian dollars. all i need is a video card and i think i will be set, any suggestions for that, and on the whole system? i am planning on using the 10KRPM hard drive as a boot drive, and running the other two in a RAID array.
let me know what you think!
thanks!
thanks!

Buying a certified system. :)

Not trying to be a jerk, just honest. If you're dropping the amount of money for a Media Composer trying to save a few bucks on building your own system that will only cause you headaches doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

heh, i knew that was going to come up, and that is still an option for me, but on that system specs shart, it says to refer to the avid dell 490 configuration guidelines, where do i find that? i tried searching avid's website for it, but came up with nothing.
also, do you just go to the dell site and configure your own system according to these guidelines, or do you order it through avid?

so i went and looked at dell's site, and tried to configure a system for myself, but when i get to hard drives, i select one i want as a boot drive, then two for a RAID, and select the raid 0 configuration, but it gives me an error saying i can have only two hard drives for that configuration. what if i want one as a boot drive, with all my programs on it, then the raid for storage of everything else?

also,
would this video card agree with avid?

I'm still kinda thinking about building... that way ill know exactly what's in it... and its fun!

I bought a Dell 490 workstatin last June--got it during one of those goofy 25% off programs. 2 xeon 3.2 processors (you may have better options today), 1 SATA drive for programs, and 4 gigs of RAM. Found a couple of 10k Sata drives at NEWEGG (don't forget to order the cables) and popped 'em in without any problem--you do not need any additional mounting hardware from Dell for that.

Next I stuck an Adaptec SCSI card in and plugged in a MEDEA 1.25 external drive and a used LT0-2 tape drive I got on eBay for $750. I have used Raylight/Premiere Pro2, Avid Xpress 5.7, and Edius Broadcast 4.xx (as well as sucsessful trials with DV Rack 2.0HD). All have worked without any major issues on the 490.

Your choice of the Quadro FX 1500 is a good one. I run two 19" Princeton flatscreens on mine.

Best

so you just bought a barebones 490, and upgraded it yourself?
that could also be an option...
what kinda of case came with that dell though? because i know some cases dell's are built in have very limited space for upgrades which can be a problem sometimes..

get the HP XW 8400....... its what all the big boys use, and its crazy bad a$$. It is a little more expensive, but honestly well worth it.

This man speaks the truth. You can run anything from Mojo to the Adrenaline HD on one of those.
