It's nice to feel appreciated...

As for personal projects often our own work looks dated too after a couple of years and might be pulled down.

Some of us may still like the "dated" look. But seriously, there are a lot of reasons why such videos should not be taken down. One of them is that it renders the thread discussion pointless if the clip in question is not there. Also not everyone is going to buy the newest and shiniest camera... with ebay now hundreds, or maybe even thousands of aspiring filmmakers are looking to "upgrade" to a HPX170 or an F3 in 2016. To them, all those old threads from 3 or 5 years ago are specially relevant now. And I'm sure others would agree that some of those "dated" works are more impressive / inspirational than some of the stuff that gets posted now.

Ahh... well. I knew the thread will lose its 5 star rating the minute I mentioned it.
And David W Jones, thanks for bringing that up. The method works, in fact , I use it sometimes to turn a 300 mm prime lens into a 300 - 600 mm zoom lens for events and wildlife. The lukewarm response I got from others discouraged me from posting any more samples or info about it .

I hate to bring this up again but almost every single post I make gets downvoted lately! C'mon... seriously? 9 out of every 10 posts I make? And no... I'm not mad, but it's kind of ridiculous...

Posts: 666. Might be a clue there...

Yes, seriously. You post this thread about being appreciated. You post about how brilliant your threads are. Just how narcissistic are you? You asked a question about being hired for a broadcast camera operator. You were naive about the job market. People were very helpful; telling you how it really is. Then you took credit for that post as being a great post by you.

You posted a thread about making zoom lenses out of primes. You played a game no one wanted to play. It became a lengthy post. Somehow, you think that makes it a great post. If you have something to contribute, then make a contribution. Don't make 20 questions out of it. We are not here for your entertainment. That stuff belongs in the Cafe.

So just what do you expect people to do when you take credit when you haven't done anything? How do you expect people to react when you try to loft yourself as some great contributor to the forum?

There are quite a number of professional people who steadily contribute their vast knowledge freely. They rarely get thanked. They ask for nothing and they keep contributing. They never post a thread about feeling unappreciated. They just keep helping people with knowledge that took them 10 or 20 years to attain.

This thread in particular, has put the stink on you. I think people are fed up and are reacting to this thread in your other posts. No one likes someone that tries to seek recognition. It's in bad taste. I know you won't understand any of this. Don't expect others to feel and react the way you do.

You've misread my attempt at sarcasm Paul... The title of this thread was simply a way of thanking the forum for banning me twice.... an "honor" I felt I did not deserve. Not seeking recognition here... but I take offence at being called a troll ( earlier on this thread ). Only made reference to my past contributions to prove I was not a troll. And yes, some of my threads back in the Merlin Steadicam days were mostly questions, but as the saying goes life is not always about having the right answers, but asking the right questions, so I take pride in that. And if the thread got 6000 views and 6 to 8 pages worth of comments, why not, I take pride in that too. Because silly questions or threads don't get that many people talking.

Well, there you go. You were banned and learned nothing from it. You continue to learn nothing from the responses you are getting. You take pride in asking questions; a very unusual take on life. You take offense at being called a troll, but you don't take introspection as to why you are banned or called a troll. So nothing is learned. Nothing changes. The collective is reacting to that.

EDV, some of your posts really are useless or obnoxious, especially Can you turn a prime lens into a zoom lens?. But I never downvote anyone just for fun.

It looks like you have become victim to a few vindictive or prankish downvoters. Maybe send a private message to one of the moderators, and ask them if they can see who is downvoting you capriciously. Give them links to example posts. They should not tell you who it is, but they can then discipline those users, anywhere from a warning by private message, to account suspension.

I don't think the moderators are on my side since they closed and deleted another thread of mine. I admit I went a bit overboard with some of the screen grabs there, but the thread dealt with an alleged ebay scammer. A scammer needs to be exposed and reported once it is established he is fake. The thread came close to doing that and deserved to remain on the forum. I almost lost $5000 to this ebay seller.... but others may not be so lucky

I don't think exposing the scammer was the problem. I think the problem was dragging his family into it and posting pics of them. What possible useful purpose was there in that?

And I probably shouldn't even refer to him as a scammer, since all I know is that he didn't reply to email from you. There are all kinds of reasons why that could have happened. Scamming is a possibility, but it's not the only possibility.

I feel a bit complicit, since I'm the one who did the research, which led to his wife and then to him. I just thought I was helping you avoid being ripped off. I never would have condoned incriminating his wife or posting pics of them in relation to this, even though it's true that those pics were on Facebook pages easily accessible to anyone.

I will admit, there are a lot of red flags on this guy. But he also has a LOT of very positive 'likes' on his Ebay store. There could be a good explanation for the problems you've experienced.

If.....and it's by no means certain at this point, but IF......the guy is a scammer, then it's certainly fair for you to warn others in an effort to save them from being burned. But you have to tread carefully. There's a fine line between legitimate warning and libel.

Good lord. EDV -- seriously. This forum isn't your personal soap opera. Personal drama, complaining about mistreatment, bragging about views -- what in the HELL does any of that have to do with the purposes of this forum? In case you (or anyone else) has missed it -- the forum is here to help and assist people to make the best video work they can, to share techniques, business advice, news, reviews, etc. It's not a chatroom, it's not a dating app, it's not a psychiatrist's office, and it isn't anyone's personal vendetta-airing mechanism.

The forum is largely self-moderated by the users. If you're getting voted down, well -- there's probably a reason for it, and maybe some introspection would be warranted rather than continued complaining about it. And it has nothing to do with the moderators -- that's the users doing the downvoting.

If you can't see that dragging in and posting pictures of people's wives and kids is a problem, especially since the guy had done NOTHING to you whatsoever, other than (heaven forbid) not return an email when you wanted, well... look, perhaps you're not a great fit for this forum? I don't know who banned you before, but generally when people get banned twice, they start to take the hint... As in, whatever it is you're doing that's getting you banned... you might want to consider not doing that?

Frankly, the mods have discussed it, and we're generally getting a little tired of the sideshow. So the simple request is: contribute meaningful content and help folks, or just move along, okay? Thanks.
