FS7: It's Coming!

I bought a used FS7 for 7K from Adorama and it should be arriving today. Condition is Like new so it's either been lightly used or not used at all.

What are the important things to look and test for in order to make sure everything is operational?

Thanks!

Good deal! Adorama will stand behind any initial problems.

First, of course, make certain you are at firmware version 2.0

Then check handgrip for any slippage. Viewfinder mount should also be checked. In a dust-free area, look at the sensor to make certain no dust or other imperfections.

Even if it is already upgraded to firmware 2.0, do an ALL RESET just to clear out anything that might have been oddly set.

Does any of the remaining Sony warranty transfer? Did Adorama offer any third party warranty?

Enjoy!

Not sure if any of the Sony Warranty transfers. Adorama will let me return within 30 days no questions asked. They also provide a 90 warranty. I do miss out on the metabone IV rebate/deal. For me personally, I was going to buy an Ultra anyway and it's worth the 1K in savings.

Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely make sure to check the firmware and do a reset before testing.

I wonder if any of you bought the 3 year extended warranty. Why not?, It's only $429. Even if I don't wind up getting a manufacturers warranty, 1K off on a 8K camera camera with a three month warranty is definitely worth it to me. If anything major is wrong with the camera I'll know within the first three months. If I break the camera I am covered by my insurance (something the warranty wouldn't cover anyway). In addition, American Express offers an additional 1 year extended warranty on electronics when you pay using your AMEX.

As for the adaptor, I know from experience that the speedbooster typically stays on my camera 99% of the time. The only time I decide not to use it is if I need a little extra reach and don't have a long enough lens.

Any other ideas of what I should be testing for? Hot pixels, glitches...common parts, switches, knobs or latches that people are getting repaired on their FS7s?

+1 for checking to make sure grip adjustment is firm and ND wheel turns freely. Other than that I'd look for usual wear and tear that would give signs of not having been cared for during its short ownership. Check the lens mount for gouges or abuse.

Enjoy your new tool. Its a great owner op camera once you learn the little quirks. It produces a fantastic image and can cover so many types of work.

Just an update. The FS7 came in. I was very pleased with the condition, virtually no signs of wear and everything seems to be working properly so far. I've updated the firmware and began playing around and gonig through the menus. I will need to setup my user menu and custom buttons so that adjustments are quicker. I'm also waiting on the rest of my xqd cards and ikan tilta v-lock before I can set the rig up to the way I like. The LUTSs settings are probably the most confusing when dealing with playaback and external monitors. So far the camera looks very promising.

I found out from Sony that they don't store information on serial numbers, however, the camera was only released in October so my warranty will at least one year from then.
