It's A Shame... 5D vs D90

I was watching some shots taken with the Canon 5D... God I love the color range and quality of the picture. And it's 1080 too. BUT as we all know it's 30p
and the video, with all the Canon quality, looks like VIDEO. On the other hand the D90 has that magic film look we all are looking for... the image, however, is by far not as good as 5D's.
One of two things is going to happen: Nikon will improve the quality and resolution to 1080 or Canon will turn its wonderful Mark II to 24p... I'd better wait and see... Another great event coming soon it's the Red 3K Scarlet...
For our benefit, the video market is becoming too competitive...

Please, take a look at these shots...

yeah nice quality, but as always no movement...for a good reason! Motion blurr looks like premiere pro frame blending timescale. If you can't set the shutter to motion friendly settings, it's all just for taking fotos with small movement features. I don't see much point for buying an expensive pro DSLR just to play around with h.264 compressed video footage. The D90 is the better deal for playing around, testing locations, cute little student films and so on.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that scarlett or the new DSLR killer camera from RED ar supposed to be around 1700-2500$. So why bother with an expensive canon 5D, except ofcourse you are a pro photograhper and need it anyway.

I agree. Both cams are cool but with too many flaws. I'm sticking with my HVX200 and waiting for things to settle down. The market is way to hectic for my own taste at the moment...

I wouldn't count out Panasonic either... They could surprise us and come out with a new large CMOS chip cam in an HPX170 body. From the look of it, CMOS is here to stay, and is rapidly getting better.

Another great event coming soon it's the Red 3K Scarlet...

The Scarlet isn't coming soon by any stretch of the imagination.

-It shows at the trade show in May 09.
-It ships in Fall 09
-3000+ Red One owners have priority as first buyers
-Your Scarlet will be in your hands if everything goes perfectly probably in early 2010

Soon???

My first feature that I shoot with the 5DII will be a two hour thriller called "Bird on a Branch". ..........;-)

I'm tired of birds on branches.

Someone finally has a clue.

I don't know WHY people keep bringin' up Scarlet like it's any sort of near. If someone gets one early 2010 I'll be surprised.

...and by 2010, I think we'll be hearing about some kind of dedicated cine video camera from Nikon, and probably a cine video camera from Canon based on the 5DII sensor.

Scarlet reminds me of the Atari Jaguar video game system in so many ways. King of the hill for about 6 months, and then obliterated by the competition.

I'm waiting to see what Nikon announces in the spring. I guarantee they'll be bringing video to their pro line.

Agreed, a lot of the 5D Mk2 stuff looks very video like, but a lot of this may be down to the person making the piece (?) - I am sure some of these people could make an Arri SR 2 look like video !

Anyhow, here is some much nicer, much more filmic footage from the 5D mk2 - even running at 30 fps it looks unlike a camcorder.

Holy Crap. That was the best Camera analogy I've ever read. LOL!!!

:D

In the current climate (D90 - 5Dmk2 + whatever shows up in the next 12 months) RED need to move way faster !

By the time the Scarlet it available in significant numbers - Nikon and Canon will be 2 or even 3 models into their generation of video capable DSLRs.

Yep, the future of how this plays out seems pretty clear to me. I just don't see how Red puts a sensor as good as the 5DII in the Scarlet considering Rodney Charter's statement the the usable ISO of Red One is only 250 before unacceptable noise creeps in. The 5DII is obviously light years ahead if that is the case. How much Red has been able to close the gap will be seen on Nov 13th, but that will only be claims by Jannard. You're right, Scarlet need to be "Now" not a year and a half from now.

They are at least building "Brand" in the professional community, and this will help when it comes to competing in the down market. Even so, Red is more of a boutique brand akin to Manley or Millennia in the audio world. There is plenty in the market that competes with Millennia at a much cheaper price even if it's considered only very marginally lower in quality. But the cache of these upper end audio brands relies on their class "A" circutry in the analog realm. There is no such mental set in the video realm. The notion of what ever works seems to reign there among everybody except the most elite DPs, certainly not among Red users who are just looking for some semblance of film quality. If these users are willing to compromise and go digital, anything will do that meets the standard. I'm just saying there is nothing that meets the same kind of snobbery in the cine world as with users in the audio world. So Red must compete price wise considering the raptors that are lurking in the tall grass that will eat their lunch. I'm not sure just having brand cache will be enough because they really haven't had alot of time to build "brand" as the market is now moving so fast. IMO anyway.

I'd say it's closer to ISO 800, after being scaled down to HD resolution. I guess that depends on what one calls unacceptable, of course.

As far as Scarlet goes, the RED people say it will begin shipping next spring, with waiting list being sorted out by fall 09. Scarlet will probably have a more sensitive sensor than RED ONE, being newer technology by a generation.

How can you guarantee such things, doug? Know something we don't? :D SPILL

Oh, I don't know anything. But it doesn't make sense for them NOT to do it, unless the 5DmII bombs (it won't). Notice I didn't put any timeline on my guarantee, but I'd guess they'll have a D700 or D3 caliber product shipping with video in the summer.

" It's A Shame... 5D vs D90"

And why is the introduction of 1st generation DSLR w/ HD video a shame? Seems like a very promising first step for a DSLR cameras with Video Capabilities. Kudos to both Nikon & Canon.

However, I do believe Nikon will have a slight advantage. The Challenge for Canon will be to proceed with minimal impact to their current HD video Camcorder line. That is going to be a limitation for development or... it's going to be one slippery slope. Nikon's road is free & clear.

Cheers

Jannard himself has said that if they don't get all orders done by later 2009, they suck. Its expected to ship soon after NAB, in April. This may or may not be true, but I choose to have faith. I think Red will deliver their promise.

I don't think Red is stupid, and they know that everything is progression from this point. They've said the Scarlet is going to be far more then anybody expected, and blow minds. This is all hype and marketing, but I have a good feeling about it. I wouldn't let it affect your purchase of a camera NOW, but I think it will be sustainable.

Jannard's signature on the forums also reads "everything in life is subject to change... just like our camera specs and information."

Nothing wrong with having faith. Keep having it, maybe it'll make them move faster and stop baiting people.
