GH2 It was fun while it lasted : )

After the past year and a half of using the GH2, I have finally taken a new path- a black and magical one. Just wanted to say this is a fantastic forum and I probably spent far too many hours just sitting here pouring over posts. I learned a lot, and it was fun while it lasted- everyone is very helpful here and there's always good advice to be had. Hopefully all you GH3 owners will get that thing hacked eventually; I'll have to check in once in a while to see how all that madness turns out : )

No, no noooo! Don't leave us!!!

Bwah...!

It's gonna be so lonely without you ... I feel... so abandoned!!

Indeed. By around next Wednesday it should be ready to shoot. And here is something ridiculous to look at in the meantime:

What will you be able to do that you could not do with your GH2? Also my main question other than the first one is why leave GH2/GH3?

BMCC looks like an amazing camera but unless I start making A LOT of money it just seems to expensive to use as of now with how much storage is required for raw. Furthermore the GH3 is an excellent camera and being able to shoot 1080 60fps is a thing of beauty....

Well, for me I almost never ask myself what a camera can do compared to another. I'm not so practical in that regard. In terms of functionality many cameras are quite similar already. Shooting video is a hobby and is the closest thing to art I'll probably ever get into.

Im ALL about the image. That's the only thing that matters to me. I just don't care for all the bells and whistles that come on cameras these days cause I don't need em. If I need 60p I'll use the GH2 which I think looks friggin fantastic.

The BMC is really the only camera that's made me want to leave the GH2. I could have jumped on the fs100/ f3 or other cameras at one point, but in all honesty I genuinely liked the GH2's image more. I almost went for a Sony F35 if you can believe it- just because I loved the image THAT much.

I have a very beefy system that handles raw pretty well. I'll be shooting mostly prores though, which to my eyes looks almost the same as raw. BMC prores believe it or not is a lighter footprint in premiere than hacked GH2 stuff. It scrubs super nice and grades like a dream.

I spent $2800 on the BMC and sold resolve that came with it for $750. Honestly 2150 is pocket change for a camera like this. And I'm not rich by ANY means. There was no hesitation in buying this little beast.

If you don't have Resolve, then I hope you're not planning to shoot in Raw. Took over 24 hours to transcode 30 minutes of CinemaDNG footage to 2.5k ProRes 4444 on a MacBook Pro 2011 (16GB of RAM and SSD drive to a G-RAID Mini).

Resolve is much faster.

No doubt. ProRes is just so damn good with this camera, that I'll probably wait to jump into RAW until I can really benefit from it. Although transcoding CinemaDNG to ProRes might be a lighter load in my system w/ 64GB of ram and 4* 240GB SSD in raid 0.

But you're right, Resolve is much much faster for that kind of thing. I'll play around with lite in the meantime to get a bit of practice until I can make use of all the extra nodes.

Congratulations!

The BMCC is the one that could pull me away from the GH2/3 but I can't justify it, and it doesn't fit anything I want to do right now. Of course, waiting to see what they will do with m43.

Enjoy....

I'm surprised people make all this hoopla about "leaving" the GH2/3 for the BMCC...when they are completely complementary. The BMCC requires a heck of a lot of compromises to get that gorgeous image, and there are plenty of instances where having a GH2/3 would perform better anyway (not from an IQ, but from a usability perspective).

Frankly, I don't see how it is possible to use the BMCC as a sole camera in one's inventory.

BMCC puts out a lovely image, borderline amazing for the price..... Problem is that this 'Hobby' of Art can become a business even on a small level and you just need to start putting out projects faster. While I love grading I personally now do not have the time and I am getting the look in camera as close to I want it real life. Maybe the Pro Res of the BMCC can get the look in camera?

I love the idea and concept of the BMCC I just do not feel that it fits my current work flow, I feel the GH3 with it's small form factor and great image quality while compressed still looks beautiful.
I have honestly felt for what I do stories and set design and lighting are becoming more important than camera. Hd cameras are getting to the point where they are are comparable , your concept and how you present it to the world is what is going to separate you from others.

BMCC excellent image quality but as of now My Focus is on story telling, art design, lighting and with a GH3 with some nice lenses my camera is not holding me back....

Yea, you can shoot to ProRes and choose the video option rather than the film option. The film option provides a log like option, and the video option provides a contrasted more saturated image. (I believe this is correct, but I could be wrong as I have yet to use the camera).

My feelings exactly.
Also, I find it really interesting that RAW was the whole selling point and the strongest reason for the hype on the BMCC, but now that it shoots Prores most seem like they will shoot that most of the time.

Because a lot of people like the idea of Raw, but have no experience and are thus ill-prepared for the reality of it.

RAW is great to have on the camera. It was really amazing working with the DNG's in resolve, seriously it's just crazy the kind of latitude it offers. However BMC prores is good. really good. It's far easier to manipulate than any DSLR footage and after playing around with C300 and 1DC log files, I think the threshold of BMC prores is still quite a bit higher. I was pushing curves all over the place and it held up (In terms of artifacts introduced by curve adjustments) noticeably better than the canon log stuff.. Then stepping up to RAW is like a slap in the face. You almost get to make new images out of the "outlines" you've shot haha, it's crazy.

Make no mistake, if this camera only shot prores, I'd still be all over it. RAW for me is like icing on the cake. When I absolutely need to shoot something at the highest quality or for visual effects / greenscreen stuff, it's nice to know it's there, waiting for you : )

My o.post was slightly sarcastic as well, I still love the GH2 guys. I aint goin anywhere. In fact I'll be using it all the time especially on my flycam. Only a madman would leave their GH2 behind.

To have these 2 tools, my GH2 and the BMC for under 3k is just crazy, it's pretty awesome to be a filmmaker these days.

First of all, it's "Raw"...there's no acronym that "Raw" stands for. Second, the only difference that Raw gives you over ProRes 4444 is the ability to adjust the white balance in post. It makes no difference for fx/keying.

If Blackmagic Design would add 2.5k ProRes, I'd never see the need to shoot Raw, and I would feel much better about a purchase.
