It came, it came!

My hmc arrived yesterday around 6 30 or 7. I woke up around 8, and jesus christ my day was loooong! My order came in two shipments though, the HMC first and the card/card reader were supposed to come today (missed the UPS guy because i was out filming!). Luckily my roommates phone had a micro sd card, so i popped that thing in an adapter and went to town as soon as possible. Today I filmed literally as much as my battery and that 4 gig card would allow me (dumped it twice:)). My ONLY impression is that I LOVE it, and if you've been hesitant... stop now!! buy this camera. The footage I shot today already looks pretty awesome to me, and it was my first time out... also I was sort of rushed through most of it and didn't mess with many settings, just found one that looked good and stuck with it.

However, the card reader wasn't working on my macbook so i dumped the files on my roommates computer. Tomorrow I'll bring them over to mine, and post some of it... If someone can pry the HMC out of my hands, that is!:grin:

you can hate me if you want, but my hmc has a special feature that will destroy your life =X i set it as user 2 of course.

do tell!

i haven't even begun to mess with the settings and i'm already so pumped on this camera. we were gonna go out today but the weather might prevent that... GAH i hate texas weather! wearing shorts all week, today it's freezing. whyyyy:crybaby:

yeah, i actually like winters here, but it's already in the 90s... i can't imagine what this summer is going to be like!

anyway. my card and card reader came today. i laughed because i thought i got one 16gig card and the card reader... but the card reader came with a 16gig card. so i got two!

playback stutters on my computer so i'll have to see what i can do.

It takes a while to know how your system will hanlde the footie. It definitely taxes the video card for sure. 1080 stuff especially... but I've been cutting the footage on a 4 year old G5. I use a buddies faster Mac Pro for the transcoding but do the cutting on my trusted G5. That thing has been a major workhorse and the G4 before that. Countless hours of trouble free operation. I've made the switch from SD to HD all on the same box.

I've had toast 9 forever and just now got around to messing with it. I couldn't figure out how to transcode to prores so i went with AIC and it looks pretty good. I can't really compare it to the source file since my laptop just hangs, but hey, I'm satisfied with the AIC at least for the time being. Once my vx2000 sells I will be building a computer that will handle it with ease.

It's ridiculous how much larger the files get after being transcoded. When NLEs can handle AVCHD my harddrives will have so much more space.

I just now got around to messing with the clips in fcp... they look good in the viewer, bad in the timeline and when exported. I'm sure i'm missing some setting changes somewhere, any tips on what they are? Also any tips on exporting the clips?

well if it's anything like my experience in vegas, you need to make sure your timeline looks good because that's what will be exported. It needs to be 1920x1080, 29.97 fps (or whatever frame rate you filmed in), upper field first, 1.0000 pixels, with best quality.

I got it looking a little better but it's still not the same in the canvas as it is in the viewer. It just has a darker grainier look to it... this time (different clip) it's a little less noticeable, but still! I need to get around this. I believe the source footage is 720 60p and I don't have the option for that, so i went with 1080 60... could that be it? otherwise I don't know how to change the canvas to 'full quality' if it's not even that right now.
