F3: Issues with shooting welding?

Has anyone filmed someone welding and had any sensor issues before? I'm asking since it will be brighter than the sun and have more UV than just about any source. Ive seen several videos with welding footage but didnt want to take a chance.

Color shift issues because of the UV are possible, but the vastly more common issue these days is that welding tends to look awful on CMOS sensors that aren't global shutter. I shoot industrial environments frequently, and did so plenty on the Sony PMW-F3. The light generated from the welding is not truly constant, but flickers, inducing some awful rolling shutter banding. The ECS can help sometimes, but if you absolutely need high quality welding shots, I recommend finding a global shutter camera.

Yup...some flash banding as it stops and starts. However; last bit of aluminum TIG welding I shot, I did some of it at 1/2000 shutter speed, and there were some fairly cool electrical arc/crawling discharge tendrils coming off the welding point. Fairly impressive for slo-mo purposes.

It's worth noting that the flash banding is effected by a number of factors:
- Quality of the electricity incoming to plant (How regulated and clean it is)
- Quality of the welding equipment (how cleanly it takes and processes the electrical current)
- Style of welding

So, you might get different results using different equipment and different personel at a different plant.

Something like the Blackmagic 4k Production Camera with it's global shutter may give you better results than the F3 for this task.

We've had very good results shooting welding and grinding with the F-3.... Real time and 60p/24. No flash banding problems.

Thanks for the reports. I really want to do this project on an F35 but I cant make it work financially so F3 it is. I'll report if I run into any weird issues.
