Issue with CD-ProRes Combine/Transfer Tool (Corrupted files)

Hi All,

I'm wondering if many of you have been using CD's Pro-Res tool. I went ahead and tried to run it on set (as a backup) at the end of the week, and noticed something strange had happened when I was done. Therefore I went ahead and preformed a standard backup without the Utility. Fortunately that means that all of my footage is intact, but upon further review this weekend, I'm definitely noticing several of my clips (3) are corrupted. Out of 12 total Pro-Res clips, 3 were corrupted in the transfer. This was on the receiving end only, they were unaffected on the main drive.

Background: The drive had been freshly formatted on the 7Q, only Pro-Res (4K2HD) mode had been used the entire shoot. No problems occurred during the shoot, and in review all of the original files (copied via Finder) were completely functional.

Each clip has a slightly smaller size than its working original. For example, one clip's working version (original) is 993.5MB, while the non-functioning CD-Transfered file is 986.5MB. I've noticed a minor size discrepancy with a couple of the correctly copied files as well, so this may not be related to my issue. That being said, that discrepancy is rare among the functional files, but 100% for the non-functioning.

Any thoughts? This, fortunately, has not impacted our work severely, however I'd love to be able to rely on this tool as on on-site DIT method in order to eliminate one more step in the post workflow.

Best,
Ted

The DIT I've been working with also reported a size discrepancy between the original and the clip combined footage. We have compiled a great deal of footage and I have not had any corrupted files that I know of. In what form did you notice this corruption?

The files simply won't open on two different systems. This is the second time we've used the system, and earlier there were no problems. The only difference in the two different copies was that the first time it was done from the CD Drive over Thunderbolt to a 3-drive RAID, and the second time it ran to a FW800 7200RPM single drive. I'm not sure if speed bottlenecking there could cause the issue?

What exactly does the Prores transfer tool do compared to normal copy/paste? It says on CD website that it "Copies Odyssey7Q ProRes (.mov) recorded clips, combines each clip's files into a single file, and optimizes ProRes files for play/editing on a computer."

Does this mean it combines the 4.3 chunks into one big file? What does the optimization mean?

Someone else posted the same problem awhile back. I would just avoid using it. Lining up the 4.3 gig chunks is super easy in any NLE and not worth losing any data over.
