FS7: ISO settings with mLUT, what to use?

Looking at his screenshot of LUTCalc it does appear that Adams may have built his LUT using the F55 (not FS5) preset, but he repeatedly refers to the FS7 so I wouldn't read much into it. And since it's an mLUT used for monitoring it shouldn't matter whether your using an FS7, F5, or F55. AKAIK Sony doesn't offer individualized LUTs for each camera.

His LUTS for post should work fine too, it's just that Pull 1 would be for the F5/FS7 at EI 1000, & the F55 at EI 640 (etc, etc).

That's exactly the LUT I am using and it was created in LUTCalc just using the Varicam gamma which is very close to LC709 but with midtowns raised just a hair and he uses the LC709A gamut which slightly desaturates in the brighter areas. And yes as Ben says , F55, FS7 etc makes no difference. You do what the camera LUT to based on the default ISO of Log though not for any change say to overexpose for highlights. hence F55 1250ISO, , FS7 2000 ISO. You can still uses CINE EI to change your ISO in camera though to get lower noise.

Yes I tried to import the LUT from the homepage to lutcalc and it gave me a native ISO of 1250, so I simply changed it to 2000 and saved it down. Wouldn't be fun to go out on a shoot with the wrong value =P

Does changing the ISO on a burnt LUT have a massive difference.. say 1 stop either way.. I know its changing your DR.. and noise.. but what else..

Thanks

I don't believe you need to alter Art Adam's LUTs. At the end of the article he wrote...

"A reader pointed out that two of my MLUTs had the same gamma, which isn't right. I then realized that I didn't need either of them as we only need one MLUT for the camera because ISO changes are handled by applying a 1D LUT in the camera itself. We need different LUTs for post, though, because that compensation doesn't happen automatically in a grading app.

The only MLUT you need in the camera is AA709A. Post will need a LUT that reflects whatever ISO you shot at.

I've updated the file by removing the Pull 1 and Push 1 MLUTs and leaving only the native. The grading LUTs are the same. Sorry about that, I shouldn't do picky things late at night".

So even if I want to monitor the native 2000 ISO of the FS7 I still can use the one he supplied in the link? Well that makes everything a bit easier for me, tried to change the darn settings to 2000 ISO but it doesn't affect the image at all actually, the image wont go brighter or darker it just gives me the same exposure, as if the file didn't save my settings in lutCALC.

Yes just use the same one. Its not ISO that matters , its whether your using the curve for the native ISO of the camera. For FS7 2000, for F55 1250ISO. After that if you change your EI you are under or overexposing the basic Slog curve. The camera's Cine EI software corrects for that and you don't want to change gammas to compensate. In post you do want to use a corrected LUT.

There was a long discussion of this on the Sony Community Forum. Its fun and helpful to just search for CameramanBen's most on this and the Sony forum because he does a lot of 'xplainin. Incredible guy.
