shoot on standard 4:3 aspect ratio so you can have more options in post to tweak the look? Does that sound right or am I dumb? What is the best aspect ratio to shoot?
The DVX has native 4:3 chips other than using the anamorphic adapter to produce in-camera 16:9 you are correct that 4:3 leaves the most options.
I have a project now that provides an example. I am working with a large developer who is building 8 gated communities in the mountains of NE Georgia. These include several spa's and lodges as amenities plus homes.
They have a sales center that will feature a theater for viewing a video that will entice people with an overview of the mountains, lakes and activities and then showcase the homes and homesites in the 8 communitues.
We started to shoot this with two DVX 100b's in 4:3 and intended to use a high quality DLP projector in the theater area. Distribution would also be on DVD's as part of the brochure packages. Now on the spur of the moment they tell me they are going to switch to 50'' plasmas with surround sound in two small theater areas and they want to have 8, 21'' plasmas (or LCD) to play a short looping video one for each resort so people can leave the main presentation and go to another area of the sales center where that specific property is explained in detail.
So after that long winded intro I am facing converting the the 4:3 to 16:9 for the sales center presentations. While producing 4:3 for DVD distribution.
Fortunitely we contimplated the potential for letterboxing so we shot 4:3 with the DVX 100b's but protected 16:9 by keeping the main scene content in middle 1/3 of the framing. Some of the footage was shot in 60i (mostly helicopter shots) and the rest in 24p.
So we have some options to accomodate the changes in display mode.
Unless you can control the whole process from prodcution through distribution manintain as much flexibility as possible.
