Is this typical banding for and unhacked GH1?

Depends on what you mean. The color banding or the macroblocking? The camera always has strange flares around lights.

I didn't watch it fullscreen so it's hard to tell with the darkness in either case. the background being out of focus helps the macroblocking a lot. I paused a lot and didn't see much in the way of the color banding in the usual places. I think it's pretty good for an unhacked camera.

Can depend on what lense you use at what exposure...to me it dont look bad at all...I think people get too hung up on these things way too much Ive seen loads of big budget hollywood films with banding and flares.

You say in the description you have iso 1250, but mine only has 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, with 3200 being unselectible in video. How'd you get 1250?

Switch to Manual Photo Mode, press the Menu Button. Toggle to Photography-Settings, scroll down to Iso-Increments or something like this and set it to 1/3EV.

There you go, much more ISOs to choose from.

My first search didn't find anything, but I got it yesterday, thanks. I also now know what he meant by "banding". I always love how I think I've researched everything, yet there's ALWAYS, a major issue I didn't see that, of course, affects my major purchase.

Oh vell, my HV20 would of had a lot of grain in low light anyway, so I just need to figure out how to light and expose everything properly.

I finally figured out what he meant by banding. I wasn't reacting to the banding in my original post, just the light flare/ring near the end. NOW I see way more banding in the dark shots. I've been doing more experimenting and in some dark shots, banding is very noticible and others it's not.

The eyepatchentertainment guy made this vid on it:

The more I try what he says, the less banding I see. Basically you need a light either in the foreground or background that can illuminate the sensor "enough" to minimize banding. Even having just a low power typical CFL in the shot, can make a big difference in how much noise there is.

Lighting and shot selection is going to be twice as important in these unhackable GH1s, but if we can do it right, we can get some great looking footage.

I noticed in the second shot this strong banding on a lens flare. Is this typical of an unhacked GH1?
For an unhacked GH1 at ISO1250, the entire video is remarkably clean. Even with a GH1 hacked to 75Mbps, I've rarely been able to use ISO's above 400. While there is visible macroblocking in much of this video's shadow detail, it's inevitable at high ISO's and could easily be crushed to black in post.

To actually answer OP's question it's classic GH1 banding, yes (present in GH13 too). The problem is simply releted to underexposure, and from my understanding, GH2 users struggle with nailing exposure still, and usually you have to be slightly over for it to look clean. This is, anyhow, one of the biggest flaws with GH1, and worst thing is that you usually won't notice it until it's too late. I owned a VERY clean GH13 but about 30% of my footage is crap since it looks exposed right on the flipscreen, but terrible on the computer.

...then of course your unhacked GH1 has a low bitrate and thus muddy naturally.
