Is this safe?

I just made a poor man's steadicam which requires using black cobalt steel pipe/
Is that safe to hold? Does it have lead?

The dust of it can be a lung irritant if inhaled. It will also release a toxic gas if heated above 1000f.

You could always cover the pipe with pipe insulation. I did that once and secured the insulation with zip ties. On another stabilizer I used bicycle handlebar grips. Get the kind that have a plug that pops out and you can postion the grips anywhwere on the stabilizer.

Don't use duct tape - go to a serious bike shop and get handlebar tape. That stuff's the bomb and I've put 2000 miles on a road bike one Texas summer and it never came loose (yeah, I weighed about 30 pounds less back then...) It's padded and has some stretch to it - you start one end with two sided tape (it comes in the box), wrap it tightly, and then either tuck it into an open pipe-end and use a plug (supplied) or just use black electrical tape (which stretches too, for a tight fit that looks pretty clean). Ask the bike shop guys to give you some pointers. Heck, they'll probably sit there and wrap some for you, bike dudes are usually pretty cool. Or buy on line from performance or nashbar.

Comes in groovy colors and prints and plain black. Handlebar covers can be good, and you get the knurled-grip molding, but you're limited to a pretty specific pipe size (they'll go on 1/2" iron plumbing pipe with some work). The tape is just kickass stuff for DIY.
