Is this really possible?

Well if you notice, all those shots are macro shots - which makes the shallow depth of field more noticable.
As far as I know, if you were to zoom in your camera to get an equivalent field of view with your stock lens and shoot those same shots you would see the same depth of field as they are showing in the video.

I would love to see someone with a Brevis (or some other adapter whose GG can be removed) do some side by side DOF testing to show this off.

I did that once by mistake and noticed the difference after getting majorly excited about my "discovery". I had put on my adapter without the focusing screen in place and all of a sudden, there was this perfectly clear image on my monitor. Once I started messing around I noticed that while there was depth of field while adjusting the lens, it wasn't as rich and textured as on the Ground Glass... deeper than normal for the DVX but not true DOF. When I tried a test with the ground glass in place, this was confirmed.

So yes, it's possible to attach the lens to your adapter without the ground glass... but right now, the final result isn't cinematic enough in feel. You might as well just keep shootign with your stock lens at that point, unless you're just going for the look of it...

... deeper than normal for the DVX ...

It may have looked that way due to being much more telephoto than you would normally be (or otherwise not comparing apples to apples with the same field of view) - but as far as I know, it's just not optically possible.

The macro setting pushes the lens out from the image plane, allowing you to focus very close to the lens. Since subject distance is a factor in DOF, you can therefore get shallower DOF when the subject distance is very short. But the subject distance is so short, maybe a couple of inches, that it's impractical for 99.9% of shots. (The 0.1% would be that occasional rack-focus from a nostril to an eyeball...)

from what i saw on my mistake, the rack focus from nostril to eyball was possible, but anything else... I don't think so. the background was just way too sharp for a true 35mm lens effect. Just to be sure, I tried it with a variety of lenses and felt my initial excitement drain away...
