is this place getting clicky?

a clique is for wusses, i prefer to be considered part of a gang. try to get in my way and i will annihilate you, crushing your hopes and dreams like a lost snail at a rodeo. the frail shell that is your psyche will crumble beneath the weight of my insults. if you want any part of this group of bone shattering internet toughies, there is only one rule...

please put a picture of a cute cuddly animal in your avatar.

btw, If you'd like to get into an in depth discussion of Steadicam hardware, aesthetics and techniques, don't hesitate to get in touch...

Why ask? If you wanted to, you would... I think is the point...

If someone has the knowledge, and wants to share it, I hope that they will choose to do so. I'm not going to beg someone to do free work or to share their knowledge on our website if they don't want to. Especially, in this case, when said person readily expresses such a distaste for this site in the first place :/

Say... speaking of thicker skin... If I ever get a pm in the future about a random cafe post/thread that was deleted... say naked guys pole vaulting for example :) demanding detailed explanation as to the reason for deletion, and/or tossing out conspiracy theories or accusations or sleights on the personal character of mods... will it be ok in the future if I just say "we thought your post sucked, so we deleted it. get a thicker skin and 'deal with it'. p.s. you suck."... :)

I'd sure be able to take people's "tough love" approach on the board with a lot more respect and value (b/c like i said... it is a part of the experience, too) if it was also accompanied by the contributing of their knowledge and skill set... Not on you personally, but in general... a 20 year vet of x business with a vast wealth of knowledge and experience to offer who only posts to tear people down, but doesn't contribute to the pool of knowledge, or spirit of information sharing... is about as useful to the community as a 20 year old with no experience who acts like they know it all, but has nothing to offer. At least on the internet...

I didn't read this whole thread just the first post and a few scattered. Maybe that makes my point more on topic, but simply put:

* some people are rude in real life and the internet. Sometimes nice people get short, especially if they read here everyday and then see the same question posted AGAIN. I don't know if that makes them cliquey or just annoyed for a valid reason. Either way we should all be nice ;)

* the search function here is pretty sub-par, and the forum would be aided greatly by a better search

* Everyone has a perspective, but I agree that it bugs me when 40 year olds tell a 20 year old "not to bother if they can't afford [fill in the blank]" - really? A lot of people can only think through their perspective. Their advice would probably be true to a co-worker in the same industry and with the same goals, but all I know is if I listened to everyone that said "don't bother if you can't do/don't have" whatever I would have never got to the point where I could do/did have what they were talking about. When I was 21 I wanted to shoot a night scene in a house during the day (location limit) and was told "don't bother" unless I could afford the most expensive blackout material on the market and all these expensive matched lights. Well I shot it with black towels over the windows and halogen lights and color corrected and crushed blacks and it turned out pretty stinking good especially for being 21 years old and with the technology available years ago, and it got me jobs and taught me a ton. Perhaps some posters should be more thoughtful that everyone is in a different place, has different goals, different clients, different expectations, and they should pass on their advice in a more humble/thoughtful way without discouraging someone.

I think it's pride that causes us to discourage people, and as I read more and more biographies of people who were shut down and told to go away, I realize that the person I am posting to could very well be the next Steve Jobs/Christopher Nolan/whoever. We should give good, thoughtful, honest feedback that's appropriate for the person asking - as best as we are able via an internet forum. Not short, unhelpful, and unwarranted discouragements (though I agree that encouraging people with no talent, like some parents do with their kids, can be a dangerous and time-wasting thing. Objective feedback is best - for some people this will help them realize they should go elsewhere, for others it will encourage them to try harder and fix the problems.)

Had I used some name here such as "GodofWar" or "IndieArms" or "AudioGod", sure I could, if I was not in the position of section mod, be anonymous. But as reputations go, I have been met on set and asked, "Hey are you the same Doc Bernard as on DVXUser?"
Doc, I think GodOfWar and AudioGod are a different category from IndieArms…. IndieArms is actually your public ally represented business identity, and that to me should bring all the benefits (if not more) of a personal name. That's sort of my approach…

let's move the real name discussion out of this thread (if there is anything else to be said here anyways)...

trust me when i say, real names have been discussed to death... We've discussed all angles, and there is no clear winner on it. And, I've been a part of an (ongoing) 30k+ member transition to real names... experienced the work-load, and witnessed the benefits/side effects. It's NOT something on my to-do list for dvxuser. Though, we still strongly encourage folks to put a real person to their identity here on the boards. Still voluntary though...

I find the benefit to be marginal, and it really depends on each community. It tends to help some of those in the middle. but, they weren't really the problem in the first place... The assholes, scammers, etc... they'll just use fake names like they always did. Unless I start requiring government issued i.d. with every registration...

This thread came up at an interesting time since I've been away. How has dvxuser changed since i first joined ? I could enumerate the changes good and bad, but like Barry said - roll up your sleeves and help change it or...
There is not a doubt in my mind that the massive influx of new users has chased away many of the veterans...
I do have a little bit of a divergent opinion on this though, in that, many veterans have simply moved on and not looked back for reasons other than atmospherics, regardless of the expertise they took advantage of here - and that is disappointing. Not that they have to; it's just disappointing they don't.

How do we make this a better site ? How do we bring back some of the bustling of ideas cracking into each other, where the user films section rarely had a zero post thread, and there's was more talk about film making and less about K's ?

PS - I mostly gave up reviewing after I found the time I spent on it, or my comments, were ignored or glossed over. When i came back I tried to dip my toes in the water and comment on a couple of zero post threads. It just wasn't the same response as before...

Well, If I have to pick a clique.... I'm goin' with:

Okay now.
Being a mod isn't exactly easy, when we face:

Of course I am just kidding....... kinda.

Hmmm. Debating with images....intriguing.

Oh man........that was bad. Funny, but bad...... Now I am going to have that 70's image in my head every time I see one of your names.

*shakes head* *walks away*

Forget the camera. I wanna know what sweet NLE he used. The motion tracking of the DVXuser logo on the bass drum was incredible! Is there a tutorial for that effect?

See, you'll fit in just fine here. Pixel peeping that!?!?!?! Yikes, and people wonder why I drink. After watching that, I ask why more people don't. LOL, somehow, I think alcohol WAS involved with the creation of that.

And BTW, the font is totally the wrong one. It didn't move the story along enough for me. I would have chosen a more impactful font. And needed guns, lots of guns. It would have sold millions of copies, but oh well.
