is this normal footage of DVX100AE or the camera has a malfuction?

I just bougt a DVX100AE and i notice some artefacts like stairs or ladder around red parts on the footage especialy at the high contrast edges with blue color, and i don't know if this is normal for this camcorder or is a malfuction...

please look at the http://algo.arch3d.net/cacao_dvx/index.html wher i posted 5 still from my footage. The footage is recorded with scene 5 in progresive mode 25P

or tell me if there are some settings to reduce this artefacts..

thank you

Yep. You'll notice that with really bright colors (especially reds). It's one of the things that DV doesn't handle well. Try using a Chroma Blur filter in your NLE to correct it.

thank you for your answers, and Horsefilms, can you tell me a little about croma blur? are you saying to select the red channel and bluring a litle?

thanks,
Mihnea de Vries

I don't know what you use to edit, but in Vegas, there's a video FX filter called "Chroma Blur." I use that on the horizontal pixels and it smooths things out a great deal.

It's worth noting it will look somewhat less pixellated on a domestic PAL TV display - computer displays being much higher resolution will show every individual pixel and so will make these artifacts most apparent.

Yes that is an excellent point. On television the edges will be nowhere near as noticeable. So factor in what your distribution strategy will be -- if you're sending it back out to TV (on DVD for example) then you probably don't even have to worry about it. If you're keeping it in the computer (distribution for web streaming, something like that) then the chroma blur process can really clean things up.

In addition, if your webstream is a smaller image than the ones you posted, which I assume it would be it will again be less noticable.
