is this an example of stepping?

Hi

I've been working on a film shot on the DVX, and I'm having a problem in that some footage with heavy red colouring (and sometimes with heavy blue) creates a stepping effect to the image.

An example can be found here, if you zoom in to the Nose and Fingers you can see what I'm refering to? Any ideas of what is causing this.

I'm working in Final Cut Pro 5 and the footage was shot/edited progressive.

you are looking at a computer image made up of pixels. you zoom in the more pixelization you will see. red is known to "bleed" in the DV format...there's nothing you can do about that. however consider if red bleeds and the codec is using anti-aliasing to soften/blend the edges then you are going to notice those lines more because of the red.

What you're seeing is DV chroma sampling artifacts. You can, if you're not going back out to DV but something better, kill them with some funky filters I've written for FCP or FT. "G Chroma Sharpen" works superbly for this.

Here's some example images from the FT version. The results are the same as for the FCP version, but it's real time in FT - that's the difference:

I know for a fact it works very well on DVX footage.
