Is this a stupid question?

First off, I believe you can never be thanked enough, so:
Barry, Jarred, Jan, fellow DVXusers and EVERYONE from the janitor to the CEO(s) of PANASONIC: THANK YOUfor letting us poor dreamers take these stories out of our head sand giving us the ability to put them on screen that will do justification to our imaginations!!!!!

Now with that said, this is the stupid question: Are you losing ANY quality when you transfer the data from your P2 card to your "field hard drive" to your NLE storage?

I am thinking of getting the $9995 package (HVX w/2 8GB P2 cards) with at least a 100GB SATA (at 7200rpm, of course) 3.5 external drive (do I plug this drive to my laptop to "tell" the camera to put it on the external or can I just plug the external up to the camera and through the camera's menu offload the data?), after that day's shooting I come back to the NLE and transfer the footage from my field hard drive to the NLE.

With the HD output, will it have the capability, with other accessories, of course, to capture uncompressed 4:4:4 footage?

Is is true, from what I'm reading, you can approximate that 1GB is 1 minute of 1080/24p?

Is the 1080/24p at 80 or the full 100mbs?

And one more question, please help me with this once and for all, is SATA just as good as SCSI and is 10K rpm more stable and robust to use than 7,200rpm? I just want to know if 10K and SCSI are overkill in performance and in dollars?
I am a firm believer in you pay for what you get, but I am also after the BEST performance out of an item at the most affordable and most RELIABLE solution.

Thanks for listening. Your input is GREATLY APPRECIATED!

..you do not lose any quality whatsoever. its the exact same thing as transfering a file from one drive to another on a computer. because the video is stored as coputer data files.. and the camera is basically a computer that only processes and manages video capture and storage and processing.

..and no, its not a stupid question. untill youve asked it more than once.

IMO SCSI would be overkill.

You've got six months to work on storage solutions, which will get clearer as we go forward.

You can do it either way.

You can transfer it to the NLE, or edit directly off the drive (thus avoiding a file-transfer step).

You could capture uncompressed from the component outputs, yes, if you had a computer capable of handling the 166-megabyte-per-second data stream. Whether it'd be 4:4:4 (on this camera or any other) remains to be seen.

Is is true, from what I'm reading, you can approximate that 1GB is 1 minute of 1080/24p?
As a ballpark figure, yes. The true number seems to be a little lower, meaning a little more than 1 minute per gig, but for ballparking, a minute per gig will work.

Is the 1080/24p at 80 or the full 100mbs?
On P2 or streaming, it's 100mbps. If you're using something like FCP and removing the pulldown from the file, it could probably be stored at 80mbps.
