Is this a good Mattebox for the DVX?

I don't get this from the description, but is that a 3x3 box? Why he doesn't say is curious to me. It appears to me that those are loose hinges (no friction to keep them where you set them) and the shades are suspended by those cloth corners.

My knee-jerk reaction is to say that you run a good risk of not being able to use it with anamorphic ever due to the 3x3 format - I'd also contact the seller to find out how the thing attaches to a DVX.

You can get the Cavision and Chrosziel DV matteboxes to work with the anamorphic adapter using their 4x4 and 4x5.6 sized setups.

Post more info on this if you get a reply?

It says 3x3 in the description, so no, it's not a 4x4. If you want to go with a less expensive matte box, I have heard the Formatt 500 works really well...

Okay, I'll try this one more time!

I do not, after reading (in a minor haze) that eBay listing three times see where he indicates a 3x3 filter size? I've stopped looking, so if it's there, then it is there!

I think Barry Green uses the Formatt 500 box - ask him if he likes it. I use the Cavision 4 x 4 hardshade mattebox and like it okay for a system costing less than $1000. The Chrosziel system is the only one that will work with the anamorphic adapter - installed by the mfg. You must send in your anamorphic adapter for permanent modification to use the Chrosziel DV mattebox.

That is all...

Here's some thoughts.

Matteboxes that a tried and true by users on this site:

Cavision: Was all the rage about a year ago. Good box for a good price.

Chrosziel: By far the most expensive, and by far the most highly revered.

Formatt: There's a few tricks that you have to employ to get it to work, but it's definitely a viable option.

Cinetactics: They make a soft mattebox called the Matteblox. This is the cheapest option, will protect from lens flares, and work with the anamorphic. The filter system is really funky. I had one of these and personally did not like it, though many own it and rave.

Other conciderations:

For use with ana adaptor: The most popular is the Chrosziel. Though you have to have the lens shaved down.

3x3 vs. 4x4: 3x3 will work, but you'll have much more room to grow with 4x4. (Plus possible chance of vignetting with a 3x3, I would assume.) Going with a 4x4 will also give you the option of getting a 4x5.65 filter frame for use with graduated filters.

Rods vs. no rods: Rods are more expensive, but keep everything secure. Not necesary, but I'll be damned if I feel safe using a mattebox without rods, especially if you've got a french or side flags on there.

Oh, matebox great accessory!

If you want to use your mattebox whit anamorphic adaptor, wide angle lenses, etc, the solution calls Chrosziel... yes expensive but good mattebox.

If you don´t want to use it whith ana adaptor, wide angle lenses, I think that the best and inexpensive choice is Formatt mattebox.

good luck.

Another option is to build one out of black foam core and gaffer tape/glue. You can even build one to hold filters/ gels... but you might want to be careful if the filter cost some dough. This is where maybe the cost of a mattebox is worth it.

YES, YES, YES, it's not as cool...but it works & it's cheap. The price of these matteboxes is ridiculous, they're way too expensive for what we get, but it helps us pretend & feel good when usually all we need is something to block light flares.... the easiest method...used by the Pros is to use black wrap and gaffer tape for flare reduction.

you can use the cavision mb with ana if you do the Chrosziel lens mod.

Would you let us know how can you get the Cavision to work with the Anamorphic lens? The Chrosziel mod is to shave down the front of the ana lens body, correct? So, doing that do you also need to remove the rubber gasket at the back of the mattebox?
