Is there value in buying a used 5D Mark II?

I'm considering buying a used full frame DSLR. The 5D Mark II seems among the most inexpensive options. I'm just thinking it will be left in the dust in less than a year with the 5D Mark IV and maybe newer versions from Sony coming out. Should one still buy it? It's probably the cheapest full frame option currently. It can be good for making shorts, which is what I'm planning to do. It will save the bother of dealing with rental houses.

On the other hand, should one stretch the budget and opt for the more expensive full frame DSLRs?

If it suits your needs, go ahead. Especially if you can generate income with it. Invest in quality lenses rather than the next-best-thing in camera bodies. There will always be something better/newer/lighter/whatever.

I would factor in how much you would lose if you end up selling the camera in one year. If it's not a huge amount ( say $500 ), then that's a pretty cheap rental ( $10 per week ) to have a camera you can use for a whole year.

With decent lighting the 5D Mk2 can produce pretty good video, and it's a great still photo camera.

I have a friend that I work with that made a great doc and toured the world with it, all shot on the mark II. I thought he'd move up but he just loves the look and it looked great on a 40' screen.

He is also works in stills as an artist and the images of the mark II are fantastic.

Well lit and a good story and it really shines still, plus its cheap.

That's an interesting way of looking at it though I'm not sure how easy it would be to sell a 2nd owner 5d Mark II a year from now!
