Is there something wrong with my hvx?

Ok, I have been working with my hvx lately and cannot for the life of me figure out why my images are so grainy or noisy i guess would be the correct term. The blacks and even blue in the skies, well everythings pretty grainy, even in bright daylight. Is there something I'm doing wrong or could there be a chance there's a problem with my camera.

The settings are all manual, gain set to 0db, all setting set to zero except cine v. White balancing manually. Shooting on 720 24p and 1080 24p. There should not be grain in blue sky in bright daylight as far as I know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would post a clip up if I can find the space to do so.

Thank you
James

Check your ND filter slider. I noticed that my case fits the camera snugly and when i slide it into its case about 50% of the time the ND filter slider gets switched from off to 1/64. That means your iris has to open too much to compensate and it introduces noise. Make sure your gain up isn't on or kicking in.

The HVX200 is prone to noise, very easily. You really have to work with the camera to get it set to not pick up the noise.

HVX, XLH1, and HD100 all have comparable levels of noise. None of them are noise-free.

The only camera that comes close to being noise-free in this price bracket is the Z1/FX1.

Noise

Noise

So this noise is normal in the hvx? Seems that a lot of the footage i see outdoors looks to be crisp and clean, so where is all this grain coming from in mine? Seems that for the great pictures I am seeing from others that my picture looks grainy and not clean. I mean I understand low light noise but in bright sunlight blue sky is full of grain?

Thanks
J

Also, I have seen people capturing footage at night with what appears to be less grain than I have in the day. Am I mistaken? Is there something I'm missing?

Thank you
J

I defer setting suggestions to Barry. He's WAY more knowledgeable than I about such things. I'm actually struggling with the same issues. I'm about to go through the HVX DVD and book again to figure it out.

But I do know there are more technical savvy users that eliminate noise by using various manual settings. I'm not one of them.

I am having the SAME exact issues! I am having to resort to noise reduction in After effects 6.5 Pro or 7 Pro. it is disheartening to light like crazy and get noise!!! :-( A super bright sunset had noise in the Blues of the sky at Black Press gamma, with the Iris set to about 2.8-3.0 and Detail set to -1 and Detail Coring set to +7 with the Gain off and a Norm Matrix setting. How are people getting this amazing Nature footage. Mine is crap. :-(

try setting your detail coring down to +2 and see if that helpls you.

For minimal noise set detail level low (like -3 to -7), v-detail level low (again, -3 to -7), coring high (+7), and gamma to b.press. That should give you noticeably lower noise levels.

The HVX is the noisiest cam out there, look at the tests in dv.com. Outsite in the sun it shines an brings an image no other can compare, but otherwise if you shoot with some gain or badly lit settings (never do that...) or doc shooting you better buy a Canon A1.
