GH3 Is there anything better than a Lumix 35-100 f2.8 out there?

They are built for very specific lens mounts. The last I read the M4/3 version of the Speedbooster may be out in April but there will be no Canon EF version at first. Nikon, Leica and a couple of other not as common lens mount options. You will need a different Speedbooster adapter for each type of lens mount you want to adapt.

I also read the M4/3 version will be manual only with no support for autofocus. Even the Sony mounts for Speedbooster that do have autofocus I understand are painfully slow to the point of being useless.

SpeedBooster works by (in an oversimplified sense) fitting precise optics inside of a long lens adapter, and shortening the overall adapter length. As a reducer, it concentrates (or 'shrinks') the lens' image coverage circle, yielding the greater brightness and minimizing apparent lens flaws.

Because of the optics that must fit closely inside the SB adapter, lenses that may be designed with rear protuberances (some OM, LR, M42, and others) may not work without having those protuberances removed. Some adapters (eg, Nikon-EF and such) may not work with the SpeedBoosters inner optics. On versions of the adapter with electronic contacts, use of simple metal adapter rings may short out the contact and damage the SpeedBooster.

Because the optics are necessary between the lens and sensor, SpeedBooster is unlikely to be developed for any mirrorless lenses - only for mirror system lenses on mirrorless bodies. Mirrorless system lenses have minimal flange focal distance within which to fit the optics and shorten overall.

If SB was ever made for older 4/3 lenses, the resulting image circle would cover 0.71x of 4/3 coverage (~1"?)

Thanks Mcbob it all sounds too complicated and untested - I'll live with the cash outlay on the 35-100. I just want to switch on and go.

It's a bit more convoluted than that Bern, in that you have to account for the initial doubling of focal length by the GH3 sensor that would make the 24-105mm into a approx 50-200mm in 35mm/FF terms (48-210mm to be precise.)

I see what your onto. Didn't get that you were factoring FOV equivalence.

The EF 24-105/4 is one of my favorite SLR lenses & hope Metabones offers a fully compatible electronic SpeedBooster for m43. Also a non-SpeedBoster electronic adapter too.

Which version of the 17-50 tamron do you guys recommend? What would be the appropriate adapter? Thanks.

Hello Tom, I bought a few B4 2/3's mount lenses off Ebay that work with the GH2 in the ETC mode. They are parfocal and have a range from 9mm-171mm to 9mm-141mm with a constant F1.8 !!! They are heavy and need to be put on a rail system or a B4 to M4/3's adapter with a quick release mount ($269.00) I have 3 of them and they all cost under $150.00!! Here is a link http://youtu.be/wMn4C0KPbKE

Your best bet at this point is the Nikon-mount version that does not have image stabilization. This is supposedly the optics used in RED's 17-50mm, but as I understand the RED is more parfocal.

You'll need as Nikon>m4/3 dumb adapter that allows aperture control, but note you'll never know what aperture your working at unless wide-open, or completely stopped down.

If someone eventually builds a smart adapter, or smart speed booster, than the image stabilized version might be useful, but who knows if that will ever come to market, & if it will power the stabilization.
