GH3 Is there anything better than a Lumix 35-100 f2.8 out there?

About to make a purchase of 2 Lumix 35-100 f2.8 to add to my lens collection for my GH3's. Is there anything better available in that focal length zoom? Main use is for wedding ceremony shoots. Thanks.

Not really. Olympus has their f2.0 lenses but they are double the price, huge, need to be adapted to work and while autofocus works it is almost useless. You want faster then f2.8 which is about as fast as a zoom gets on any DSLR platform then you are stuck with primes.

There is some potential with the speed booster adapter once they make it to turn a Canon EF f2.8 zoom into a f2.0 but then the cost is higher then the Olympus 4/3 lens, and bulkier.

You can find Oly 35-100/2's used for ~$1500 nowadays... they're still much much larger, though. If you run full-manual anyway, it's still a viable choice.

Someday soon-ish, a combo of SpeedBooster and a Sigma 50-150/2.8 should yield a ~$900-1100 35-100/2 equivalent lens... although that's obviously of no use if you need it now.

The lens does seem overly priced. Tamron makes a 28-105, constant 2.8, manual focus for $500. I can't believe electronic focus and OIS would more than double the cost. Especially given that they also make a 17-50, constant 2.8, internal focus with OIS for ASPC, and it costs only $650. (Compared to the Panny 12-35 costing double that for a smaller sensor.)

Then again if you went the Canon route it would be closer to $2,000.00 so if you look at it that way it is a bargain. Tamron is a third party lens maker and their stuff is always cheaper then Canon made lenses. Why is that? I don't know but thats just the way it is. I'm sure there is some technical reason for it. Now if Tamron made a lens for M4/3 then perhaps it would be cheaper as well but it is hard to say since they have not made any zoom lenses for M4/3 yet. When you add up how much a 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and every range in between (all at f2.8) the price doesn't seem so bad. Of course you could always adapt the Tamron for M4/3 if the cheaper route works for you. Tamron also has some f2.8 zooms a lot more expensive and comparable to the price of the Lumix zooms so perhaps the other lens is cutting some quality corners.

I wish those m43 lenses were larger;)
The GH3 has crossed over to a Canon ASP-C size housing anyway, I´d rather have a lens the size of the Canon 17-55 2.8 f, for manual work that is...

@awomias please report back how you like the 35-100 and maybe even post some footage - thanks!

Current arsenal...
Panny 14-140 - Go to. Love it. Wish it was faster. Considering getting another one.
Panny X 45-175 - 45 is a bit steep to start with but this is fantastic for event work. Love the servo zoom...
Panny 20mm - Gold. Absolute gold.

The 35-100 f2.8 sounds like a fantastic lens. Those of us who started in video and not photography have had a very difficult time shifting value from the camera (fixed lens unit that costs $X) to interchangeable lenses. Really think I might pickup the 35-100 this week..

Just picked up my PAL Gh3 (finally) and 35-100 as a package for $2700 AUD. Stoked with both and the 58mm thread is perfect for my genustech variable ND. Great back- up for the GH2 and am now selling my Olympus Zuiko 45mm as I don't really needit.

Can't wait to test.

It's a great lens that I didn't buy <g>.
But only because of the upcoming speedbooster. I like everything about the two new pany zooms except that I would need both in the field to cover our normal run and gun setups that we usually use Canon 24-105's for.
But with the speedbooster a 24-105 on the GH3 will be a 35-150mm 2.8 with IS and weather sealing so I opted to wait for the Metabones.
I'd like a bit more on the wide end but that will make for very nice coverage from one lens and it's already one of the best zooms through the complete range - be interesting to see it with higher MFT quality.

And FWIW I would never sell the Zuiko 45. On the GH3 it's about as a good an image as you'll get and will give you the additional speed and DOF that the 35-100 can't no matter how nice it is.

Me too . . . Just trying to decide whether or not to grab one off eBay (from Japan) for about $1150 . . . ?

Are you sure the Speedbooster will support EF lenses? It sounds like it may not at first.

j'imagine,
I think your math may be off. The SpeedBooster is a Focal Reducer.

Yes. The speed booster turns an EF 50mm lens, which with the crop factor is close to a 100mm full frame 35mm equivalent on the GH1/2 and 120mm or so on the GH3, back closer to the normal 50mm FOV as if on the full frame camera for which it was designed.

(Bold text is updated with info about the focal factor thanks TheDingo below to avoid confusion)
The focal factor of the speedbooster is 0.71, so the field of view of the 50mm EF lens will now be equivalent to, approximately, a 35mm lens without the speedbooster.

Those 24-105mm EF lenses will be close to the field of view of a 17mm-75mm on the GH3.

From my understanding, someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

The focal length factor for the Metabones Speed Booster is 0.71, so a 24-105mm f/4.0 Full Frame lens becomes a 17-75mm f/2.8 lens, which would be equivalent to a 34-150mm f/2.8 lens with the m43 format.

Best,

It's a bit more convoluted than that Bern, in that you have to account for the initial doubling of focal length by the GH3 sensor that would make the 24-105mm into a approx 50-200mm in 35mm/FF terms (48-210mm to be precise.)

Take that lens with the speedbooster attached and it's approx .7 reduction and you get approx 35-150mm f2.8 on the GH3.

Again, for us, one lens that can go reasonably wide to reasonably long with this lens' IQ, build and sealing on the sealed GH3s makes it even more attractive than the great new Pany zooms as a one lens field solution.

I had to go out last week and film some last footage before snow melt up here, for a series of winter films (funny we just got another 2' in the mountains the last 48hours.)
Anyway, I was asked to get a few of images and a cover shot for an upcoming magazine feature on the same subject.

I was out on snowshoes so I just mounted the 24-105 with a VND on a 5D and got a ton of pristine choices for the cover shot and spread coverage as well as great film footage.
I've never shot with a better zoom and the idea of enhancing it on a little powerhouse like the GH3 is looking very attractive.
