Is there an DOF-enhancement plugin ?

I'm just trying to figure out what this thread is doing in the Film Discussion forum...
Well, I dunno. This one is in the café.

I'm still trying to figure out why this is even up for discussion. A few years ago when a decent solution to the problem costs several thousand dollars, I understood the issue. Today, with large sensor cameras costing what a decent handycam cost 2 years ago, the point is nearly moot.

And ndguan, if you think your lens selection is limited because you have a micro-four-thirds camera, then my assessment was correct. This is a user education problem and not a technical problem.

In order to make this work effectively, each frame of video would need to have EXIF information with focal length selected carried along with it, and know which pixels in the frame were clearly in focus and out.

As mentioned, even if you had that EXIF information and could process it, the issue of bokeh is an OPTICAL one, and not one that can be faked after the fact in post. Again, a user education issue, and not a technical one.

ndguan, it's not that your English is poor. Actually, it's fine and you are expressing yourself just fine. The concept of what you want to do is flawed and unworkable with current technology. The technology to do this is likely available, but the computer power to process it post would cost 10x as much as just buying a proper camera in the first place.

Well, maybe someday we'll get one of these cameras in video form--

Perhaps so. But to do that at a minimum of 720p or 1080p, 24-60 times per second... Not saying it's not doable, but like I said before, the cost of doing it or the hardware to do it effectively would FAR exceed the cost of getting it optically in the camera in the first place. We aren't talking about $50k RED cameras any more. We're talking about a 550D with a 1.4 lens for under $1k out the door.
