GH2 Is there a way to shoot 4:3 video with GH2 or GH4

The multi aspect part of the GH1 and GH2 sensors was actually that they were wider than normal m4/3 sensors, which meant less of a crop factor when shooting 16:9 video (I think the sensor was actually about 18.8mm wide instead of the usual 17.3mm or so, that's why people wished the 3 and 4 were 'multi-aspect' too. The GH2 never shot good 4:3 video, there was a hack to boost the dimensions/bitrate of the 4:3 SD MPEG mode, but it looked pretty bad and was 30p only.

The GH4 is the only camera that has a high quality 4:3 mode, but even that actually has less FOV then a GH1 or GH2 shooting in 16:9 (since the 4k modes are pixel for pixel crops).

This is all to the best of my knowledge, would be happy to be proven wrong.

Also, fingers crossed that the GH5 will use the whole sensor area for any 4K 4:3 mode it may have.

Thanks Ryan,

That explains it well.

Cheers.

The gh2 mpeg 4:3 hacked isn't that bad. Depends on what your purpose and end goal is. You have to dig through personal view or google though to find the best settings and examples of it though. In fact there was a thread that showed gh2 mpeg hacked has some better quality in one area vs avchd hacked. But overall avchd is still better but mpeg allows custom resolutions and ratios like 4:3 or whatever you want.

Well I'm back to being uncertain about whether the GH2 could actually ever record in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Plenty of people over the years have indicated you could, but no ones been able to tell me, or show examples of how to do it.

Maybe @Lpowell might be able to say for certain.

The only reason I've ever been interested is because I could never do it, and I don't think I'll ever have a need to.
Cheers.

Using 4:3 or a custom resolution ratio with the GH2 is for shooting with anamorphic lens.

Again it's only a google search away.

My question, and the original post concerns how you find 4:3 ratio in Gh2 menu, and record video on it, so it comes out as 4:3 recorded video.

I'm presuming there may be a patch to do the above, but many google searches haven't done it for me.

Like I said, I don't want it for anamorphic, I know it's for anamorphic, everyone tells me it's for anamorphic, but no one can tell me how it's possible to select 4:3 in a GH2 menu and record with it.

I'm also a beleiver that if you want to shoot real anamorphic you need to motgage your house to buy the right lenses.

Just switch from AVCHD to MPEG.
These are the stock 4:3 resolutions. But with hack settings you can do mpeg HD 4:3
