Is there a P2 viewer for mac?

After I did a search here it appears that there isn't but I may have missed something...maybe there is an aftermarket P2 viewer product for mac users?

5.1.2, due in a couple of weeks. Looks to have some significant upgrades in its P2 integration including a preview/viewer capability and the ability to import cards in the background.

P2 Log is cool! BUT BEWARE!!!! the company sucks!!!! I bought the software installed it on my old Powerbook machine and then wanted to move it to my new macbook pro and they refused to allow the move. They said- Buy another license. PERIOD!

I have owned allot of software since my original Mac Plus and I have never run into this policy for licensing. Even my Discreet Logic Flame could be moved around at will.

P2 Log is very functional & lean... however, it is no more than a utility and to not allow legitimate owners to move it or even install it between a desktop and laptop is a joke. Note- You could view your clips in FCP now... it's just cumbersome compared to a Viewer like P2 Log. Wait for FCP upgrade!!!

Harsh words there. I can't believe you're griping like this about a $100 dollar piece of software, which in PAL land has enabled me to pay for it a hundred times over by it's ability to read 720P 50 footage with their customised QT components (5 months before Apple is about to provide the same functionality).

Their support is fantastic (the MD called me back on my mobile recently on location in Holland to sort out an issue), and all questions are answered.
They definately don't suck.

I agree with fielddominance, such a licensing sucks. I've never seen something like this and even if it's $200 (not $100), I don't like this philosophy. There are other ways to increase your sales. I wouldn't mind having to register each machine to their site but not being able to move a license from a computer to another, or when you reinstall the OS, sucks big time.

Personally, although I like the software, I will not buy another license because of this.

Carlos, we DO work with customers to move the application in cases of computer failure or a system upgrade. In your case, you simply wanted to use it on two separate computers which requires 2 separate licenses--one for each computer.

While there are many licensing schemes, the type we've chosen for this product is not uncommon. But I will not bore you with the many examples (from publishers like MS and Intuit).

If you want a logger that's easily moved between computers (a different licensing scheme), consider HD Log. (We offer full credit for your P2Log purchase towards any version of HD Log.)

As for FCP, we are happy that Apple has chosen to acknowledge the growing P2 user base by adding better tools to the NLE. They're competing with other editors like Avid and Edius which already handle P2 easily.

FCP is not a competitor to a logger. For example, buying another copy of FCP at $1100 just for P2 viewing that can be had for $199 doesn't make much sense!

Also keep in mind the Apple "solution" is a one-way ingest. There is no provision for things like saving back to P2 format, indexing, SD card programming, P2 file management, etc. NLEs have always been, well, editors---not "asset managers".

For example, even with the next version of FCP, what happens if say that computer dies and you lose all the converted QT files? Or, just a few QT clips become corrupt and you need to find the original P2 clip to import and restore it? If you've renamed the clips in FCP during import, how will you match back to the originals, if you still have them, on a hard disk or tape drive?

Last but not least, FCP requires AGP graphics whereas none of our Mac applications do. That means you can run our software on *any* OSX 10.4 Mac, even low end portables or high end Xserve boxes.

The minimum investment for an FCP compatible PowerBook is still around $2000. So, if all you need is to view P2 clips, you can spend $3100 for FCP+PowerBookPro, or $199 for P2Log and reuse your old G4 (or buy a new 13" book for under $1000).

Dan,

I really like the functionality of your software and in fact find it very useful. What I don't agree with is your licensing. You did'nt know my intensions nor did you ask. When I requested a license change you just said buy another license, period. You really did not give me any options. I think I speak for all of us in this forum when I state that we are all sensitive to "Intellectual property" and the protection thereof. Therefore, you should consider that most of us here don't want to share our licenses among our colleagues or multiple machines. However, I will admit that most of us do use a laptop in the field during acquisition and switch over to a desktop to actually view & edit our clips. I think thats where the static lies among this forums users... For me, It's not that I was unwilling to purchase the additional license... it's that I am not accustom to this type of of licensing scheme and was ultimately offended by having to spend an additional $99 or $199 to move my software or try it out on my other machine.

When I am done with my current project I'll be sure to contact you so that you can move my software to my new 17" .

Note- I don't think there has been a thread here about FCP licensing????

I agree. I have a G5 for editing and a Powerbook as a field P2 ingest station. I would really like P2 Log on both machines but for US$200 ( NZ$300 ), I will definitely be waiting for the FCP upgrade and trying to work around having to buy two licences.
A laptop and a desktop are pretty much the mandatory way to go with the P2 workflow, so having to buy P2 Log twice would really suck.

Dan, from what I can see there appears to be a concensus of like 90/10 against the licensing model you've choosen..... I like a number of people use a desktop at home and a laptop in the field but the current licensing scheme requires me to pay twice for a "license" which is not going to happen... as a compromise why don't you do something like 1 license full price then the next at say $25. The next would go back up to $100 to stop anyone passing on the cheaper license via their previous purchase.

I strongly believe that your current licensing is costing you very substantial amounts of revenue!
Cheers

actually to get a mac laptop that'll handle the HVX200 HD.. you only need to spend a grand and get the regular macbook.. and when you get the educational discount it's even cheaper... Even after jamming two gigs of RAM in mine and a new 7200 HD.. .I still only spent 1400 bucks. FCP upgrade to 5 was also only 199 and I got DVDSP and MOTION 2 and Soundtrack Pro all thrown in for free. Now, tha'ts a deal if you bought FCP 4 or 3.. for a bit more.

Also when you get FCP you can install it on a few comps and only run issues if they are all on a network....

Individual licenses for apps like this just turn me off. Why not charge 150 bucks and allow up two 2 or 3 licenses... I have a G5 and a laptop and both work for me all the time. Just seems kind of petty.... and taking and using MS as a guide puts you in some dubious company to say the least....
