Is there a new model "dvx100bps" coming out?

I called my salesperson at fullcompass to get a quote on a 100b and he said that the 100b is discontinued, that there's a new DVX100BPS that is scheduled to ship mid-September, and that they have 5 on order. Well, that made some sense to me with the current rebate offer expiring end of Sept (to clear out stock), but then I checked around and don't see anything about a new model.

I'm new here, so I really don't mean to start a rumor or anything. I looked at ablecine's site and the *current* model is listed with a part number ending in "bps" so, I'm suspecting there's just some confusion on the part of my fullcompass contact, but I wanted to be sure before ordering. Any ideas?

Doesn't make any sense to me. The standard-def, 4:3 DVX is becoming more and more obsolete as time goes by.

maybe it won't be standard def. Or maybe 16:9 SD with AVCHD.....I wish they would do something like that.

hmm...

hmm...

maybe, but you'd think if there were a possible upgrade coming out as soon as two weeks, the net would be buzzing with discussion.

Well the guy at Full Compass is not playing with a full deck. the AG-DVX100B is labeled on the side of the Panasonic box AG-DVX100BP. I have the box sitting in my office as I received it on August 4, 2006.

Best,

Rob

The P indicates it's a NTSC model, but what about the S suffix? How do you explain that?

It's possible that Panasonic has made a change in their manufacturing process or added some small enhancements -- I think the jury is still out on this, but Full Compass is not only an authorized Panasonic Broadcast equipment dealer, but also a service center. They know what they are talking about.

kind of funny that "p" indicates NTSC, do they use "n" to denote PAL?

Well now I'm truly confused. I'm eager to order, but not if there's potentially a new model to be considered.

Not sure what the codes all mean exactly, but I just checked my DVX100B box that I received this past April, and the box lists the product as DVX100BPS. So, I have no clue what FullCompass is on about, but it appears to be the same camera, no changes.

My camera says DVX100BPS.

When I filled the rebate out online and typed in DVX100BP it said I couldn't submit it, so I looked at the box and it said DVX100BPS. I don't see any new features and nothing seems out of the ordinary...

Hi,

The P indicates that it is an NTSC model and is desinated for shipping to North America. E would indicate a European model. The model that is shipped in the US today and only in the US is an AG-DVX100BPS. This indicates that there is a paper inside that will tell you a website for registering your camera and getting the rebate. We started this model number in February last year when we started to ship directly from Japan to the dealers. The cameras actually go through Customs as they leave Japan. In Canada, Puerto Rico and the Panama, it is the AG-DVX100BP.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Thanks, Jan, that's very helpful. Thanks to everyone else, too, for checking your box numbers, etc. I'm going to call my FC guy again and see where we got wires crossed.

I didnt even know there were different models to the 100B. What are the differances?

there is the
DVX100
DVX100A
and
DVX100B

and there are several differences, and more then just color changes. If you are interested, start a new thread.

just to wrap this up...

just to wrap this up...

So I spoke with my guy at full compass again. It seems they may have (internally?) discontinued part number DVX100B. BUT... they're about to receive their next batch of "AG-DVX100B"s, which are, of course, the same thing (and it is the BPs) as discussed earlier.

Due to stock and local dealings, recommendations here, etc. I ended up going to ablecine.com, who gave me a dvxuser discount, as anticipated.

FWIW, I had the same experience someone in another thread had in that I called them twice and never got a return call. Would not necessarily run to spend my money there for that reason, but the guys were nice in person and, as I said, gave me a deal I was happy with.

Thanks again to everyone for helping out with this little bit of confusion.

Hi Jan, are there any plans to release something like 100C with native 16:9 support? Do European models have better 16:9 support than North American? After all, they have their TV in widescreen for almost a decade now. What cameras do they use for widescreen SD PAL?

Europe has widescreen broadcasts, America doesn't. In America, if it's SD, it's 4:3. If it's HD, it's 16:9. We don't have that middle ground that Europe has.

Of course, Europe ended up with a lot of complications because of that too, so some broadcasters started demanding product in 14:9 aspect ratio (which is halfway between 4:3 and 16:9). That way whatever gets broadcast will look equally bad on everyone's television... :)

I doubt we'll see another SD camcorder from any of the manufacturers.
