To whom it may concern,

this will be my last letter...ow wait ....darn you water boy!

Anyways, ok, I know, alots of speculation with this lil puppy, but i just saw a new dev kit demo a few moments ago and thought "wow!". ( the link to the footage: http://files.filefront.com/MGS4_PS3_Devkit_Demo_Eng_subs/;4440530;;/fileinfo.html ) Anyways, Ths ps3 is going to supporting linux os's. What do you all think? If the ps3 is the "supercomputer" that sony claims it is, will you buy it?

Ciao,

Roberto

The HVX is running a Linux OS too, with an Apache web server in it. Somebody hack that thing so I can run virtualdub on it already, willya? ;)

What?? is this a joke? what is the purpose of a web server (Apache or otherwise) doing on a video camera? And actually, I'd be interested in hearing more about the specifics of what is obviously a customized Linux kernel and how it's being used on the HVX? footprint?

I have no idea what the purpose is -- that's what I (believe I) heard one of the US camera engineers telling someone at the DV Expo booth.

oh well, it's intriguing as I never gave much thought to the inner workings of these cameras, and as someone who has worked at several companies all running Linux based servers and creating Linux based products I'm just surprised I never thought about what's the brain inside these devices!

Guys, Guys Its no big secret, I've been silently ranting on about this for a while now, Sony indents to make a Cell based Workstation for the "Digital Content" creators I.E. NLE, VFX, CGI etc... and it will be like having a "mini" supercomputer on your desktop.

By the way I was doing some snooping at the Dev side of PS3 and it supports OpenGL and C.

I've tinkered with a bit of 3D stuff, now I'm looking over at this whole games programming stuff, darn ! I always hated C so much, time to face the enemy...
my First game will be called "Block Attack! " (i.e. Tetris clone) :)

It definitely runs linux. The only question mark is what the web server thing would be about...

Probably just like the one running on your router or hub (if you have one). It makes it easy to configure via a web browser. Just plug it into your network and change settings, etc. You'll probably be able to load up and save presets and such, if they're smart.

The camera more likely has a RTOS adaptation based upon a Linux kernel.

I don't think Linux is real-time enough to be an RTOS.

Then again, how quick does it have to be for a camera....hmmm....

Still think it more likely what I said.

Well Lets see,

The Offical spec of the PS3 alledges the PS3 has 1.8 Teraflops of processing power

Source: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/614/614682p1.html

Now in the offical top 500 supercomputers (2005) the supercomputer that ranks in number 50 has 7.1 teraflops

Source:http://www.top500.org/lists/2005/11/basic#

That would mean from a basical calculation that 7.1/1.8 = 3.94 or say about 4 Sony PS3's

Now for some fun

this is an extract from a while back (source:http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/chips/0,39020354,39117919,00.htm)

"The IBM chips show up in a $5.2m system officially named X but informally dubbed "Big Mac" that Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University researchers assembled over two months from 1,100 dual-processor Apple G5 computers. That system ranked No. 3 with a performance of 10.3 trillion calculations per second, or 10.3 teraflops"

lets do our simple maths again 10.3/1.8= 5.7 or round to 6

now allthough we dont know the price of the PS3 (no offical statement released) speculation says around $400 , so that means 6*400 = 2400

In other words

IBM "X" aka "Big Mac" Supercomputer cost $5.2m

6 clustered PS3's, cost $2,400 (approx)

Anyway that was fun.

Anhar - Brilliant deductive reasoning. Of course Sony (or IBM - depending on who you ticked off) now has a price on your head. I suggest you go into hiding. Good luck!

Damn, I as my life was not hard enough, now the big corps are gonna be after me too. Do you know how one may buy a Mexican Passport?

I wonder how many Ps3s it would take to render the kong/trex battles (the battle in the ravine with the vines) in the king kong movie? Or how long it would take with 7 clustered PS3s. Lets say it was a whole minute in the ravine..just to keep it simple, lol.
