Is the Pal version missing 24p?

I've been hankering after a HVX for a while now, but read in UK specs that 25p is available but there is no mention of 24p. Is this true? I realise the 25p is very close, but thought this to be strange.

A year ago P2 scared me cause I didn't have a laptop. I still don't but can borrow one now! Went with HD100 because of tape recording. I remember phoning up after ordering and asked to change order to HVX, but the sales guy talked me out of it!!!! Aww man. Sorry had to get that off my chest...:crybaby:

Sorry to bother you guys

I know a few Aussie movies are shot 25p. With the PAL cam you only get a max of 50fps too. I'm in PAL land and decided on a NTSC cam but it really comes down to what you want to do. If you are going to shoot more TV stuff the PAL would be a better choice.

I am confused between JVC HD110 and HD111E. I will be using the camera most of the time in PAL country but I am in and NTSC country right now. I will have my own editing machine. Should I go for NTSC? It's a thousand dollar cheaper plus you get IDX battery for free. Why is the PAL so expensive than its NTSC counterpart?

JVC can be dual format, right? The pal HVX records 1440 x 1080, vs NTSC 1280 x 1080. That's something to consider.

24P aside, The PAL version of the JVC camera is more expensive in Europe because there is an additional tax on cameras that can act like a VCR. So JVC released two PAL versions (HD100/HD101 / HD110/111). The 100 can record pictures, but you can't edit and then send the footage back to the camera through firewire. All a bit confusing as no other manufacturer released two versions. JVC did it to avoid tax for people who don't use their camera as a deck.

As for 24p, if you're in Europe you really don't need it. We have been shooting 25fps on film in Europe as it works as both a TV and cinema format. This is so much simpler - inlike the system of 24/30 in the USA. If you are making an indie film you will need to show at festivals, and most festivals can show 25fps films. If not, a conversion to 24fps is very simple and not noticeable to anyone other than your composer. If the composer does get annoyed, you can get the sound repitched to run at 24fps anyway.

The only real reason for anyone in PAL land to buy a 24p camera is cost. In Europe we pay more for our cameras, so it can be worthwhile buying a 24p camera in the USA to save money.

There is absolutelly no need to crave after 24p because 25p works MUCH better technically. 25p is just recorded to 50i PAL data stream and that's it. In NTSC you have to fit 24 frames to a 29,97 frame data stream (pulldown, drop frames, big mess...). PAL 25p has none of that sh**.

TV in PAL is 25 fps anyway. so 25p movies work perfect, 24 fps movies are actually shown speeded up on TV. If your 25p is tranfered to film and shown in theatre nobody will notice it running a few precent too slow.

Most people on this forum talk about 24p because they have NTSC cameras (and a lot of problems to discuss). Nobody talks about 25p because there is NO problems using it!

Note some on set light sources and camera configurations (shutter speed and Hz rate) may result in a slight flicker in your footage, when mixing 50Hz camera or power with 60Hz power or camera.

I was thinking of buying a US HVX to save money, as in the UK the HVX is expensive. I suppose I'd lose the warranty if I imported one to the UK. I suspect I'd also not receive the free 8gb card?

Does any one have experience of buying a US HVX and from the UK?

Is it a risk?

Can you get the PAL version cheaper, too?

You'll get tons of problems converting to PAL if you buy a NTSC camera just to save money.

As far as I know the PAL version comes with free P2 cards now. It didn't when I bought it. Suppose that's the curse of early adopting...

Be aware that if you are going to import a camera there are some significant import duties to pay. I'm in Australia and will not be sending customs a christmas card. I had to pay 10% GST plus %4 import duty (thinks that's what it was called).

As far as I know the PAL cam only shoots up to 50fps, so that could be something to consider.

I don't think pal TV is displayed at 25f, it's displayed as 50i.

Tecnically true, what I was saying is that PAL 25p material is shown at the correct speed in PAL TV sets, that PAL TV is always 50i in reality does not make any difference.

In the UK there is a deal were you get two 8gb cards with the camera for a saving of £600 plus Vague Additions to Total (VAT)

I don't think that's true in all PAL markets, but it is in Australia. The regional offices handle these promotions independently.
