Is the HPX170 a handycam?

It struck me as odd when colleague of mine (long time shoulder-mount Sony user) refered to my HPX as "a handycam". Surely he should know better? From what I know handycam more aptly describes consumer, and sometimes prosumer type of hand held cameras, specifically those made by Sony. The HPX may not be full sized shoulder mount, but it's certainly no handycam...

I'd call it a handycam. As I call my EX1 a handycam as well. My first handycam was larger than either of these units. Don't get caught up in the name.

Camcorders that are held in the hand (as opposed to mounted on the shoulder) are frequently called "handycams". I'd agree with Perrone, an HPX170 and EX1 would both fall in that category. But, confusing the issue, I think Sony may have branded the term Handycam, didn't they? And they used it mainly in a line of "palmcorders".

Yes, it was a Sony thing. And yes, it was originally a moniker for the 8mm cameras. However, my first hi8 handycam was pretty darn big. And heavy!
