Is the DVX100A/B old school now?

I bought the DVX100A a few Years ago and now it seems like I have a Cassette walkman with no rewind. After watching all of the timefest videos, The HVX just looks Better in every way. I know most people would say it's the person behind the camera and not the camera. But is that really the case? I am buying the HPX in the fall. I already have the Lex.

Sounds like your theory is to keep buying until you catch up with or get ahead of emerging technology. Good Luck.

IMO use what you have keep building your skills and make good films tell great stories.

With any camera lighting plays a big part. poo poo in poo poo out its that simple.

We have shot 2 features (lo no budget of course) with the 100A and get this with no 35mm adapter :). Our second feature has been getting some really good feedback and as of yet no one has asked what we shot it on.It looks great on DVD and it looked great projected in the theater. Yes I would like to get into P2 at some point to get rid of tape not to concerned about HD but right now our 100A's are still going strong and we are learning more by keeping on shooting and not chasing technology.

Chasing technology costs way too much money and I definately am not doing that. it is a race you just can't win. The DVX is great camera and I will never sell it, I just like the images the HD cams generate.
I do agree with the dookie in, dookie out statement 100%

As long as most people get their video content from DVDs, SD television signals and low-quality web-videos the DVX100 will not be obsolete.

YEah the 170 is rather tempting as is the 200A
Someday someday haha

good luck with whatever decision you make and keep shooting

The DVX is still getting press so can't be all that bad. Current issue (July 2008) of DV magazine (Digital Video) has two stories on productions which feature the DVX, one of them the cover story.

jumping up to HD costs sooo much money as well. I will find out in September/October when my HPX comes in whether I made a good choice stepping up to HD.

The DVX is a great camera & can provide you with amazing quality.
HD will come down in price by the end of 2008. Thats when im upgrading because im happy for now with my DVX.

DVX100A is still being used in lots of productions. Check out "MY COUNTRY, MY COUNTRY" by Laura Poitras...an excellent example...and good luck! : )

I don't think the DVX range will be old school for quite some time, considering it yields results approaching 16mm film. Even the high-end HD cameras they use on ZODIAC, SUPERMAN RETURNS etc still don't come close enough to emulate 35mm, so technology still has a while to go...But HD is becoming more and more affordable, so go for it filthrich, and all the best. They're all great cameras, and they all look like film. So make a great one.

When they change the name of this forum to HVXuser or something, then you will know that the DVX HAS become old-school.

Until then... and probably beyond, I'll be making movies with my trusty 100B.

I love my 100b, and I really feel that until I make a film better than Iraq in Fragments, or even November, I really cannot upgrade to another camera. Then again I am still playing Gran Turismo 4 for ps2 and loving life, so whatever. People are always impressed with the images it produces, even my friends at chapman and northridge, are impressed and they shoot mostly super 16.

BUT.....if you look at the number of posts for the HVX, it has almost caught up with the DVX, and the DVX had a few years head start. So the HVX is obviously the more popular camera now. But I love my DVX100b.

PS, filthrich, if you think the use of tape is outdated/redundant, you can always record via firewire straight into a laptop, with ADOBE ONLOCATION. I know lots of peoole who do that and never use tape anymore, then they bump it up to HD, color grade it, and it looks fantastic.

Awesome point. Add LAND OF PLENTY by Wim Wenders to that list also. These movies look as cinematic as anything I've yet seen on the HVX.

What blows me away is how much more latitude the HVX and other HD cam equivalents have. I have only 2 gripes about the DVX, Latitude and the amount I can push in post. Its not the DVX fault, its MiniDv's fault with its compression, I dont even mind shooting in SD, but I really need that extra latitude and ability to play in post. Also I would like somthing less noisy. I love my dvx, but there are some pretty blatant reasons to go hd, at least in my eyes.
