is the dvx internal preamp acceptable in a pinch?

searched but couldn't find this issue covered. simply put: my rode ntg 1 does not seem as sensitive to distant (or even close) dialogue as i expected. i often need to crank input volume so my question is this: is it terrible to use the internal preamp gain. i realize anyone would want to avoid it, but if i must use it at a literary reading, am i going to regret it later?

i realize ideally the rode would be attatched to the microphone stand the speaker is reading into, but some of these guys are poets and end up walking around, which leaves me camera mounting the thing. (having the subject moving unpredictably also makes booming problematic..as muvh as i hate it, i think i'm stuck with camera mounting.)

any help is much appreciated, thank you!

The DVX preamps are fine, some of the best available. But you can also go into your recording setup and toggle the MIC GAIN setting (is that what it's called?) between -50 and -60, that might give you the boost you need. And, obviously, make sure you're set on MIC and not LINE on the switches in front of the XLR ports.

(built into a camera, he means)

But yes, quite usable in a pinch. I find that in most cases I have to set the DVX gain low-to-middle with the NTG-1; what do you call "cranking"?

Also, be aware that the recorded signal tends to be a lot cleaner than the headphone signal - the DVX headphone amp (in the 100P, at least) hisses something nasty!
