Is the DVX-100B Obsolete because of 4x3 format?

Please note that this is a feature ONLY available in the DVX100B. The DVX100A does not have the option to view Squeeze footage in 16:9. The original DVX100 does not even offer Squeeze mode.

Check HERE for a great example of what DVX squeeze footage can look like when all is said and done.

Anybody know what scene setting was used with this excellent clip ? Looks real CLEAN...

in one word YES

Used a DVX for 5 years, bought a HMC150 and there is no turning back
4:3 is dead...

Time to move into the future

We have two DVX100Bs in regular use. They work perfectly (except for one blown FW port) and are going out on a shoot again this week. The biggest difference we've seen in the past year or so is more demand for 16:9 and a lot less for 4:3

When we're asked - 'Do you shoot high def?' - I usually say 'Do you mean widescreen?' - and in most cases, that's what they actually mean. Since the majority of our work ends up on the web, shooting in HD can actually retard getting the job done.

In my world, 'future proofing' by shooting everything on HD would be a pointless exercise: 99.9 per cent of what we shoot gets used once - for the web - and never again.

We use the HD gear when it makes sense - financially and technically - but if the DVX's will do the job, that's what we generally use. But the additional zoom and the vectorscope on the HMC150 is starting to break down that tendency.

All that said, I don't see our DVXs going away any day soon: saved by 16:9 squeeze mode, by the fact that they can produce excellent quality video, but ultimately because they work and they keep generating revenue.

Cheers,
George
