Is the DVX-100A really worth it?

I am a rookie in using the dvx-100, since we just recently bought a new, unused low priced dvx-100 here at our video production company.

Now I have ordered a dvx-100A to use in my own projects,
indie-films etc. But I am thinking that it the A might not be worth it, and instead getting a unused dvx-100. Delivery here in Norway is beginning of february.

Many of you have much experiance with the dvx-100, and might now have a dvx-100A, what is your opinion? It seems
to me that the dvx-100 can do the job still, especially for a rookie like me...?

Considering you can get a new DVX100A for about $3400 and you're unlikely to find a used DVX100P for under $2800, I'd say go with the 100A. Not only do you have to go through the worries involved with buying used gear (is it stolen? is it busted?), you also will be getting some nice new features: slow shutter, gain in progressive modes, improved optics...

why not?

Re: Is the DVX-100A really worth it?

Well, I have a chance to buy a brand "new", unused, unopended dvx-100, from a pro dealer, costing 31000 NOK or a dvx-100A for 40.000 NOK. The difference is about 1470 USD, so it might be worth while?

I am thinking I can get a "new" dvx-100 and adobe after effects for less money than the dvx-100A....

what to do, what to do.... :-/

If you can get a new DVX100 and you know it's from a reputable dealer, and the difference is $1470 (US dollars, too!), then personally, I would forget about the "A".

It depends, though.
Would you like gain in 24p mode?
Would you use slower shutter speeds?
Would those be worth $1470?

If you answered yes, then go for it. Personally, I just bought a DVX100 a few weeks ago *because* it was about a thousand bucks cheaper than the "A". I'd much rather invest that money into some FX filters, the anamorphic adaptor, or as you said, an editing program. But if you'd rather have the new features, go for it. Me, I didn't, and I'm turning out great stuff with the '100.

Used DVX100s regularly go for $2500 on eBay. As I said in another thread, though it might not be your preferred method of purchase (though it's no more hazardous than buying one from an ad in a forum), there is no better gague of market value than what something sells for consistently on eBay.

Re: Is the DVX-100A really worth it?

THe problem is of course that this is about much money, though here in Norway it is not as much as it would seem to you in the US, we have very different pricing here on pro electronics ( not consumer though)....

I am really considering dvx-100 and after effects, and I've read and seen so much about the dvx-100 that I am confident it can do the job almost as well as the dvx-100A.
The question it seems, is how much we are willing to pay for "almost"... :-/

Thanx for the replies, I will be reading this forum in the future,
it is great.

Well, I'm a little confused with what you mean here. Is the money an issue, or isn't it?
If it is, I know for a fact that you can use the 100 to get VERY good results. It comes down to your skill, really. If you're a good videographer, you can get good results. If you're not, you won't, and neither camera will do you much good.
Basically, what I'm saying is that if you can afford it, you might as well get the 100A; why not? But if it will negatively affect you to spend the extra money, then its probably not worth it. The average person (well, I'd bet even the average pro) wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the end results of either camera.

Re: Is the DVX-100A really worth it?

sorry for confusing you.. :)
well, it is a matter of money, although I am capable of buying either camera. The thing is, what I can gain from my budget,
considering also getting after effects, which I am drooling over these days.

The problem it seems, is that I am not a typical cameraman perhaps, I've a sort of jack-of-all-trades, I want it all, and want to do it all...

Thanx.

Same here. And if money isn't a huge issue, I'd just get the 100A. It does seem like a big difference in price, but you'll probably regret not having gone with the "A" and buy one eventually. If you were just doing short narratives, I'd say go with the "old" 100P, but it sounds like you're going to having a pretty eclectic usage of the camera, and the slow shutter, gain modes, etc. may be a nice tool.

Re: Is the DVX-100A really worth it?

well, now I have decided to go for the old dvx-100, and also
gettting after effects 6.0, and all that for less money than the dvx-100A.

I am cofident now that I can overcome the shortcomings of the old dvx, in just getting experienced with it, as I did with
my good ol' sony trv-900, which had many shortcomings, but have done a great job for me.

so thats the end of this story, and if you're wondering about getting the 100 or the 100A, don't ask me, now I am all dvx-100 fan.

anything shortcoming I'll fix in the post, hehe ;D
(never heard that before guys,eh... 8)
