Is the D800 still a viable, cost-efficient alternative?

Hello!

Im just about to sell my D600 and planning to buy the D800 instead. Before i order one, I would love to hear some honest, up-to-date opinions from people who are using it.
There is not much info on exactly how well the Mosaic filter performs, and especially in combination with a Ninja or BM shuttle.

Is the D800 still a viable alternative before the D5200 and D7100?

I would say yes.

The D5200 and D7100 have a cleaner image (no aliasing or moire), but apart from that the image is very similar (including DR, codec, hdmi-out, etc).

In fact, if you want full frame, the D800 and the 5D3 would be the only options I would consider right now. I would put them at a tie... now that the 5D3 has clean hdmi out too.

Is the resolution and rolling shutter similar aswell? The colors seem very nice on the d800, and might be a bit worse on the D5200 and D7100?

I guess my reasons are reinforced by the fact that im also slowly starting to work as a stills photographer, which makes the d800 a perfect two-in-one.

Would love to hear some impressions on the Mosaic now that people have had some time with it!

Aslong as you are not planning on doing something like this:

The D800 will probably be really good.

Man, my eyes hurt!

No, I am not planning to make art like that... So I got my self a D800 last week. After selling off all Canon EOS lenses in last few months ( fine set of high speed primes, some t/s and few 2.8 zooms last year) I decided to consolidate my kit with just one set of lenses for both my pmw-f3 and DSLR. So, my "old" trusty Canon 5D MKII was finally gone last week on KIJIJI.

What I love about my Nikon now is that I can use a few DX lenses I had for f3 (Nikon 17-55/2.8 and Tokina 11-16/2.8). Less for stills (thou very usable) but far more for video. I still did not try D800 with my PIX240... Looking forward to that combo when needed.

Now, I am set up with a nice combo. All ready for next fall or winter when I predict that Nikon will introduce thier 4K DSLR in a form of some kind of D4x form... Looking forward to that...
