Is the 7D the better 5D for filmmakers?

Is the 7D the better 5D for filmmakers?
If you're asking if you should buy the 7D over the 5DmkII strictly for filmmaking purposes, then yes, the 7D is a better choice - given the information we have at this time.
Even strictly as a photographer's tool, it may be a better choice too, given the improved AF, the improved metering, the improved fps, etc.
I own the 5DmkII, and I do like it, but I haven't used it much for video because it lacked 24p. The overall image quality from the photos and the video is very good from the 5DmkII, I don't expect the DR or low light capability of the 7D to match the 5DmkII.

Wow!!! Such a Solid, Confident Consensus:) Have you all shot with the 7D already?

I will admit, I'm going to buy one...put a couple hundred bucks down at my local cam shop the day it was announced....AND I'm a 5d2 owner....BUT, I'm not 100% convinced it's going to be a "Better" camera for video. I'm convinced it's going to offer more choices, framerates, AF, etc...BUT, the picture I'm getting from my 5d2 is astounding!!! FF sensors are FF sensors. The difference between my 40d and 5d for stills is evident. I'm willing to bet the difference between the 5d2 and 7d is as well (with video in mind).

Not positive...not even much more than 50% convinced:) If that makes any sense....

I'm just curious if the actual "image" itself is a beautiful than the 5d2. The 5d has it's issues and I'm hoping to see some of them addressed...aliasing, rolling shutter, etc. Not that these issues are easy to fix utilizing the same hardware and stuck within the physical limitations...but we'll see. Obviously, knowing the camera and the situations NOT to shoot eliminates the issues...

I do have an open mind, but I'm really happy with the 5d right now (Just wrapped up another edit of a wedding not 30 minutes ago:))

I own a 5d MKII as well and I`m almost happy with it.
But, like many others, I miss different framerates and AF.
BTW: Will the AF of the 7D will work continuously while filming?
The 7D is cheaper and with 18 MB not so bad within the competitors.
The "better" camera for less money?
We have to wait for the first practical experiences.

In your opinion.

Many others would say your statement is completely untrue.

24fps = flicker, pure and simple. I can see this at the cinema.

I talked to a guy testing a pre-release 7D, he is a 5Dii die hard. He told me so far to his eye the 7D video is about 5-10% better than the 5Dii video. He has not done charts yet, just his bare eye. I think the 7D has less jello, just not sure how much less until more tests come in. Rolling shutter is suposed to be much better than 5dii. For a still cam I am hearing the 5dii is a little better. It's $1k cheaper than the 5dii and it does 24p so I think it's a heck of a deal and ordered two.

Is it Philip Bloom? Sounds a little like him...

What settings are you using that say "HI IT'S ME, VIDEO?"

30p on the 5D Mark II is fine. Audiences can't tell the difference or more importantly, don't care. This was shot on 30p and not converted to 24p in post. http://vimeo.com/5787469 The subject, the client, the students, and the potential buyers of the final DVD love how it looks cinematic and don't think it looks like video.

Saying to avoid 30p at all costs because it looks cheesy far from accurate.

.........looks like a nice quality piece. I can see why the buyers like it.
However, it really has a video look to me,

We do music videos on the 5DmkII every week. And it's great. and we go from 30fps to 25fps (PAL)

if anything, the colorspace of the footage sucks for some post situations (compared to DVCProHD).

I'm sure the 7D will be nice too. But you'll have to open the iris a bit more to get the same DOF on the cropped 7D compared to the ful frame 5D. But then the 7D FOV will be closer to a film camera.

so what am I saying, "pa-tai-to - pa-ta-toe". both will be great, with slight pros and cons each way, but pretty much the same.

But 30 seriously looks so fake, i dont know if some of you guys dont see its fakiness and unconvincing movement then what can i say? It just doesnt convince me that its film and acting looks like amateur video in so smooth movement, totally not filmlike.

By the way , can anyone tell me a title of feature film shot in 30FPS ? I would like to see how it looks and does it looks so fake and bad like 30p video.

This vid still looks like 30p it feels like its under water or something .I dont know why dont ask me this but it feels so unconvincing and not serious at all.

I appreciate to have different framerates and if I can decide, I would work with 25P, but this theater about 30p is absolutly exaggerated. Some people are debating that like their religion.
I dont think that 24/25 is "better". The people are accustomed with this look, thats all. If the 7D will provide different framerates its one important reason to make a decision.

To me the thing is satisfying clients, whatever their biases are, even if those biases are grounded on sense or not

I therefore 'am stressed' by a 30p camera

It seems that 24/25 are client norms

the customer is always right
