Is the 5d MKII still a viable choice

I am considering switching from Panasonic back to Canon DSLR's for video, I was a Canon only shooter from '72 until 2010 and am hearing the call again. Have been looking at probably a 60D but have seen a few 5D MKii's around and wonder if this is a bad choice to make. I would probably eventually do the Magic Lantern thing to it. I mostly shoot nature plus standard home-movie type of stuff, but most of that is done with my grab and go Olympus. Weight is not a big consideration, I have dealt with big SLR's for years and have top end Manfrotto tripods and their new Sympla rig. Have never had a full-frame digital, plus I like the rugged, sealed construction of the 5D.

Is this a bad idea or should I stick with the 60D route? Not going to spring for a MKIII.

I love my 60D, and for the price of even a used MarkII, you have a start on a body and a lens or two, but the MarkII will beat it in low light.

The MarkII is certainly still a viable camera, and just because we have the MarkIII available to us doesn't make it any less acceptable than it has been for the past few years. For me, I always avoided the MarkII due to the moire and aliasing issues, and the overheating, but plenty of people have accepted those downfalls, worked around them, and turned out amazing content.

My only caveat is this, the canon series have always been known for their weakness in high detail shots, which you most likely shoot a lot of with your nature work. The GH1/2 are amazing in this regard, and the hacks available for them make them even more powerful in this regard. The MarkII and 60D will fall apart under any sort of heavy post sharpening, and you'll get Macroblocking and artifacts.

Are you going to be doing a lot of low light shooting? Low light being anything you can't light perfectly. If yes, and you can afford it, go with a Mark 3, or Mark 2. I shoot 60D. It's great, but when I am in weddings and can't light, I wish the camera would do better in low light. That's where my new Mark 3 comes in.
