Is the 5D mk III worth $1000 more then the 6D?

I am looking to go full frame in 2013 from my Canon 60D. I mostly do wedding video but do also do a handful of wedding photography each year. The 6D is looking good at $1999, can someone explain to me why the 5D MK III is worth a $1000 more?

It appears the 6D is even a little better in low light. I know the 5D MK III has better auto-focus (not much help in video) and has a headphone out, which is nice. What else am I missing? HDMI out in the future for the MK III? What about the 6D?

If aliasing and moire bugs you then go with the Mark III, for me yes it worths $1000.00 more just for that, I also have the 60D and tired of the aliasing and moire sometime screwed up my shots.

6d just might be the worst Canon dslr for aliasing and moire, even worst than the 7d and any other previous Canon dslr. It is almost amazing , speaking from experience.

Now yes it is amazing in low light and virtually no noise, but the moire and aliasing is so bad you can kiss 50% if not more of your shots goodbye.

I am very satisfied with my Mk3, although I am aware of its limitations. As for aliasing and moire, although drastically reduced, they are still present under certain conditions. Some shots will still be compromised by a&m, but the percentage is very low. To me any camera that has significant a&m (like the 6D) is just not worth the bother (despite workarounds).

The aliasing and moire issue is a big deal, at least for me. I hate that my 60D has this. If the 6D is the same, or worse, that is enough of a reason not to waste money on it. REALLY CANON! I am surprised how many shots with my 60D have moire and aliasing and I HATE it. I even see it in hair shots, HAIR! So, if I am going full frame, it looks like the 5D MK III is the best option for me. I hope it drops a little more before NAB since I do not have to many wedding before then.

I'd be curious to see some of this footage you've shot with the 6D. Any examples of moire-ruined shots you can share?

Just a thought.....A Canon 5D MK2 is $1529....add to cart price at Adorama - It's still one hell of a camera for wedding photography and many other styles as well. Then when you do wedding video a GH2 is only $499 at B and H. Buy an adapter for your Canon lenses...plus you'll get a working EVF, articulating screen and much sharper (and HIGHLY reduced alias/moire) video. You could use the MK2 for video as well, but your options would be endless for just $2029.

I really do not like the GH2 look. If I did, it would be a very good option. It is personal preference of course, but for whatever reason, I just do not like it. It looks like consumer video to me. The MK2 is still a great camera for stills, however, the MK3 I can use for both video and photo, plus it is better then the MK2 in both areas.

I really like the images I get out of my 5DMK3. Prior to this was shooting primarily on 7D. Massive step up.

As soon as I get permission from the Label I will post it. The aliasing was so bad it was even in the models faces. This was of course at 720p 60fps, which is used for slow motion. Even shooting 24p though you could still see it when certain lighting was on the artists faces.

Some shots looked beautiful though as I could see no noise at all + I love the full frame look. I will say though the 6d we used had a lot of bad aliasing and colored moire, worst than any Canon dslr we have used.
I will post the video as soon as I get permission.

For me, the 6D is not worth a penny more than a 5D2. And the 5D3 is definitely worth more than any of them, but I'm not sure how much, I guess it depends on how many $$$ you have at hand.

I had been saving up to buy the 6D for some time, but I had wrongly been assuming that it would handle moire and aliasing the same way as the 5Dmk3. Once I saw some tests on the internet I coughed up the extra dough and got a 5Dmk3. I should mention that I also have an external recorder that can be used with the 5D3 upcoming HDMI out update, so that was an extra point over the 6D

So in summary with the 5D you get headphone jack out, clean HDMI out (upcoming), improved aliasing and moire, a slightly better screen, a rugged weather sealed body. With the 6D you get better low light handling. If you can quantify all that you will have your answer.

Keep in mind that your recorder will need to be able to remove 3:2 pulldown over HDMI in order to work with the 5D3 if you want 24p without having to transcode all your footage in post.

The question is...how much aliasing is acceptable for what you do...
I know, many would say none...but that is not realistic if you have a max budget 3000$ for example...
Personally I can live with the aliasing of the current models (I use 60D, 600D) but Im not sure if I could accept worse than that if I d buy the 6D...(J.F.R said its worse but he was shooting 720p) so Im waiting to see more footage...
I also shoot weddings and Im pretty sure nobody of my clients has or will ever notice aliasing, so if we re talking strictly about business now I prefer to pay 1000 less and buy the 6D over the MK3
I dont care about HDMI out for what I do and I ll be more than happy with a better low light performance which seems likely with the 6D...
Finally, if I need to shoot a good budget corporate or promo I can always rent a C300 and be happy:thumbsup:
But hey...that is just my point of view...

Trust me, I'm not saying it, it's true.....

Buy a 5d MarkII for $1500 or less new and you will have a better camera than the 6d. Aliasing and moire is horrible on it, worst than even the Nikons.

Thanks for the insight J.F.R. Im not in a rush to buy now, so I ll be checking all the options...
5D MarkII is tempting (in fact I can find great deals from friends photographers that are moving to MKIII) but it covers only one of the two basic things I want (FF & low light).
Of course its better from my 60D/600D but not as much as I want...

Moire?, what about all the audio gear in the shot? How difficult would it be to at least make an attempt at concealing the wires. The MK3 won't help you there.

Referring to the photo posted on the first part of the thread by me. Yah, the mics a pretty bad looking, I believe I gave the mics to the 2 ministers while they were getting ready and that is what they did with them. That is a easy fix, bad moire in the shot is much worse and harder to fix.

I paid $10,000.00 for an XL-H1 just a few winters ago.
28 Days Later grossed $45,000,000.00 @ the box office.
I had no idea Act Of Valor was shot with a bunch of MkII's...

and y'all are complaining about aliasising from from $2k full frame camera and 1/2 the footage it shoots is ruined? lol

C'mon fellas. Think.
let's put energy in writing good scripts & capturing great moments. Not the 6D moire. :-)
