Is the 10 bit feature just a marketing gimmick?

Just heard the new 10 bit capable AFs are not really outputting 10 bit, but rather a 10 bit emulation. The AF cameras are still 8 bit native. Is this true?
 
The recordings on the SD card are 8-bit.

The only place 10-bit comes into play is on the SDI output, and there, it's some sort of dithered up-rez to 10 bits. So it's not a true 10 bits, but they claim it's much better than 8 bits, so it's 8 bits "enhanced" to 10 bits.
